August 2012 Weddings

My bridesmaid dresses are a totally different color!

So, the bridesmaid dresses came in today. I ordered two different dresses from Dessy in the color Cameo.

So, when we went to pick up the dresses, lo and behold, they are COMPLETELY different colors! They are both labeled "Cameo" but dress 1 is more of a taupe/nude color, while dress 2 is much more rosey pink. I was told that it was because one was Dessy and the other was After Six, which I assumed was just a different line of the same company. Basically the store told me I was SOL because they technically delivered what I ordered, but I swear, that taupe color doesn't look a thing like the swatch I saw, nor does it look like the other dress that's supposedly the exact same color. I just don't see how very similar fabrics would be SO different when dyed the same color! I feel like a nutty bridezilla for caring so much, but that taupe color is just not what I wanted or thought I was getting. I have four bridesmaids in dress 1 and 2 junior bridesmaids in dress 2, and it's not the end of the world, but it's frustrating when I had this image in my head of them all being in a lovely pink color and then I get taupey oatmeal instead. UGH,  I just needed to vent.

Here they are next to each other:

  • Wow, that's super sucky and I'd be pissed!  Did you order them online or through a brick-and-mortar store?

If they delivered a swatch to you for "cameo" and both fabrics don't match "cameo", then they need to fix that.  They need to label their colors different names if they don't closely match.  You are not being a bridezilla about this at all it seems.  I'd be furious.

Call them up, explain they misrepresented themselves by sending a swatch and then not delivering that color.  They need to either get you dresses in a color matching your preference or let you return the dresses for a refund.  I wouldn't take anything other than those two options, and tell them you'll report them to Better Business Bureau and blast your experience on Yelp and on TK.

I second this. I'm sorry they aren't what you expected!
  • Thanks, it was through a brick and mortar store. We've got a call in to the manager to get it resolved, and if that fails, I will likely go to Dessy directly. I feel like they are misrepresenting their own color on their website and swatches. I'll let you know how it all works out.

    Agreed with PP.

However (if you do end up SOL), I do think the dresses/colors look nice together.  How many bridesmaids are you having?  If you're having a few, and all but one will be wearing one particular brand's cameo that might look kinda funny.  But if they're mixed, or if you're only having 2 bridesmaids--one of each color--I don't think it will look weird, and you can play it off like it was planned all along.

ETA:  Oh!  Sorry, I just noticed you did say how many bridesmaids, etc you have.

  • Please do!
p.s. I wore Dress #1 as a bridesmaid once. But that was a canary yellow with cornflower blue
  • Since 4 bm are in one and the juniors in the other, I still think it will look ok....it might just look like you were trying to differentiate the bm's from the junior bm. The two colors look good together. Maybe get something in a shade of the bm's dress for the junior bm's to wear and something in the shade of the junior bm dress for the bm's to wear to make it look more tied together if really worried. (like a pin on fabric flower or a ribbon or something). I don't even think you need to do that though...I really think it will still look great. It sucks though... :( I'm sorry.
  • It actually makes it easier if it's a brick-and-mortar store - they're more affected by Yelp as it affects local markets.

I do think they look nice together, but if it's not what you want, you deserve to get your money back so you can get it.

  • Do you have swatch samples?  After you ordered them, they should have provided you with your own swatches.  If they don't match, then I'd say you have a case.  It probably needs to be reordered right away depending on how long the order takes.  Good luck!
  • I agree with everyone above that you deserve the dresses in the color you THOUGHT you ordered!!!  I also agree that the dresses do look good together if you end up SOL (although I really hope you don't because you deserve the wedding you envisioned)!!

Good luck and keep us posted!!!

  • It was my understanding that with the Dessy line, they purposely have all their lines have the same colors so that you can mix and match styles and be able to order them in the same shade, so that is false advertising on their part.  They may try to worm out of it also by saying that there were different dye lots (the stores always warn you about that if they're not ordered together).  I really hope you are able to resolve it to your satisfaction!  Like others said, at least they don't clash and actually compliment one another.
