Dress Disaster! :(

In November, I purchased a discontinued Mon Cheri lace dress off the clearance rack at a small bridal salon for $425.  It's a spaghetti strap dress but I discussed with the woman having full sleeves added to the dress.  She told me that would be no problem, they could order the lace from the designer.  It would be $170 and to come back in September.

I wanted to get a jump on everything and went in last week.  Well, it turns out that they CANNOT get the lace because the dress isn't a current style.  They tried to sell me a $240 jacket.  The lace wasn't the same and that's more than they quoted me at so I refused.  Then they said they could maybe take lace from all over the gown (make it less of an A-line, although I wouln't say it's A-line to begin with) to craft the sleeves.  I feel like there isn't that much lace to take off without hacking my dress to pieces.  I'm a little hesitant to let them just start taking my dress apart.

I'm pretty upset about this whole thing because they assured me when I bought the dress making sleeves wouldn't be an issue.  I found my dress on Dress In Moda (anyone know anything about this site?  I'm thinking they're knockoffs).  I considered buying a second dress so they could use the fabric to make the sleeves.  The second dress is the same price I paid for the original.  I know that might seem a little extreme (two dresses!) but I really have my heart set on sleeves.  The only reason I got that dress was to have sleeves added.  I asked if I bought the 2nd dress if they would do $425 worth of alterations (since I feel like they've really screwed me over.  I'm willing to buy a whole nother dress just to get my hands on the fabric, I feel like the least the could do is hem it and bustle it).  But they said their seamstresses work independtly and set their own costs so they couldn't say.

They also suggested I try a local fabric warehouse to see if they have similar lace.

What should I do?  I always always always envisioned myself walking down the isle in long sleeves but we're not working with a lot of time (wedding is Oct 27th) and I don't want to spend a fortune.  I'm so frustrated at the dress shop for telling me they would be able to do something and then not being able to.  :( gahhh imagine if I had waited until September

Wow I see how you are upset. Maybe try searching for places that sell different types of lace & just try matching it up. I don't know that I'd buy another dress but this is something you will have to decide. Is it in your budget? Can you afford to purchase the dress then pay for the alterations? Is there maybe a lace long sleeve jacket you can purchase online (etsy)?

  • Are they willing to give you your money back to go towards another dress?  If they took lace from the dress where would it come from, would it be noticable?
  • they are making it seem like they would be taking scraps of lace from as many places as they can (the hem, making the dress more narrow, etc).  however she mentioned there could be seams all over it.  :(

  • The last thing I would let these people do at this point is start taking your dress apart to try and get the lace for the sleeves. They have really not instilled too much confidence in their ability to please customers and get things done. I would start looking for lace in other places ASAP, the jacket PP found n Etsy looks nice, but I also don't know exactly what kind of a look you are going for, so that is difficult to pinpoint what it is you are hoping for. Are you thinking Princess Kate lace sleeves? or something else?
  • I agree with not letting them chop up your dress, and I hope you find a reasonable solution. I love this dress! Good luck!

<div>I think that bolero looks great! </div><div>
</div><div>I agree with PP - I would NOT let this bridal salon start taking the lace off the dress - that just has a recipe for disaster. The next thing I would do is talk to other seamstresses in the area and/or look at other bridal salons. Ask around. </div><div>
</div><div>I would probably just take the dress out of the bridal salon and be done with them. LOL. </div>

  • I agree, please don't let htme hack up your dress. I like the bolereo PP had posted as well. Otherwise I would go to a fabric store and see if you can find lace to match and make sleeves out of.

  • My only non-lace suggestion because matching the lace may be hard - would organza sleeves work? I think it would still be a soft look and not distract from the overall dress (which is beautiful by the way).

  • I agree with the last PP, since it seems like matching lace would be a concern (and it doesn't sound like letting these women cut up your dress is a good idea!), maybe an alternative? Organza or even satin could look nice.

    Good luck!

  • I would not be letting these women hack up your dress.  I doubt the bolero would look very nice with seams all over it.  Can you try to find your dress on a pre-owned site and then use lace from that on it?  I also thought the bolero that halij posted was pretty as well.

    Good luck OP!
