Outdoor Wedding - Heels or No Heels..

I am getting married at my aunt and uncles farm. They have a brand new gazebo and it is going to be amazing. The only question I have been asking myself is heels or no heels?

Im afraid that the heel is going to sink in the grass (Im going to have to walk behind the garage and then behind the guests obviously to the gazebo).  What if it rains before or during the ceremony (heaven forbid)?

I was thinking that since I am not a girly girl really in any way shape or form, I would get some converse that match my colors (love them and they are comfortable) but my parents are adament about keeping it "classy." I just don't want to sink or fall flat on my face.

Anyone have some suggestions?

Re: Outdoor Wedding - Heels or No Heels..

  • I wore heels for a friend's wedding that was on a lawn. It was bad. I was a bridesmaid, and walking nicely down the long aisle was tricky due to gopher holes (the pastor had us start the processional about 10 yards back from the last seats) and then standing during the whole ceremony was very uncomfortable because I kept sinking. And I had known about the grass and intentionally bought thicker heels, about 1.5" wide. Apparently the park had just aerated the lawn, so combined with gopher holes, it was a bad combo.

Unless you do wedges that aren't too skinny at the bottom, I would stick with flats.
  • I'd suggest wedges if you're going to be walking on grass but still want the height bonus.

  • I'd go with wedges if you want heels. I had a friend get married in cowboy boots a few summers ago for her outdoor wedding (processional on grass), and it was adorable.

  • As a bridesmaid, I have done the tiptoe thing in dress heels as requested by those brides.  For my own wedding, I wore flats.  Super special gorgeous flats...but flats.
  • I am getting married this June and I bought these shoes in yellow (Life Stride Ariel Sandal)! I would definitely recommend flats unless you would really like to be a few inches taller!
  • I had a tea length gown so heels were a must. I bought Heels Above and they worked reasonably well, considering it had rained most of the day so the ground was very soft. You can't see them in my wedding pictures and they were better than sinking into the grass or walking on my tiptoes.
  • Unless your dress is short no one is going to see your shoes so wear what makes you comfortable.  If you want a little bit of height then go with wedges but if you're not used to wearing a heel then go with flats (or converse).

  • I bought these Vera Wang flats since I have to walk on grass too and I'm already 6'1" :) It really depends on the look/feel you're going for. You can definitely get cute flats that will make your parents happy while not sacrificing comfort or the ability to walk.
  • I found these recently when I was dress shopping at david's bridal.  They are covers for the bottom of your heels that keep them from sinking into the ground.

How funny, I've seen these and thought they were a joke.  I was actually going to google them, but you found them.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • If you are not comfortable wearing heels as it is, I would forgo them. If you reeeeally want to wear them, I would look into the products PPs mentioned and try them out on a pair you already have. It sounds like the grass you have to walk on is behind everyone. Is the aisle going to be on grass or is there a walkway?

  • I will be walking on grass for my Aug. outdoor wedding.  I plan to get a pair of white jeweled flip flops and have my girls wear silver jeweled flip flops.  We are very laid back though so that might not be for you...however...if you are already freating wearing heels...Don't!
  • I am going with a pair of wedges - if you wear a smaller size (5-6) there are some reaaaaaaaaally cute wedges that are actually for flower girls but they don't look kiddish (Jemma at David's and Alisa from Miss Coloriffics) - they are between 1-2" but there are other wedges out there too
  • I am getting married in a garden in May....hoping for no rain as well! I am wearing heels, but there is a cement area where we will be standing, so I will just have to worry about the walking. If yours is in a gazebo...won't you be on solid ground as well? I am 5ft 11, and really wanted flats. I just couldn't find any I loved! So, I am going for it.
With that said...I have friends who wore cowgirl boots, sneakers, flip flops, etc. It's really all up to you! It's your day!

My fiance are getting married outside in the country at a super cute rustic bed and breakfast... I'll be wearing my cowboy boots.  My friends all told me how I couldn't but it's your day hun, wear what makes YOU comfy.
  • I wanted Converse and DH said no, so I feel you. I ended up going with Old Navy embellished flip flops. White, sparkly, flat, $5. They were perfect and almost nobody even noticed them under the dress. My girls wore David's Bridal sandals in their dress color.
