Attending first engagement party

Hi Everyone,

I will be attending my first engagement party next month. The party will be in their apartment. What is the etiquette on gift giving? Do we get off the registry or do I bring a bottle of wine? I thought we only registered a few months before the wedding not an engagement party. HELP :)

    Typically engagement parties aren't supposed to be gift giving events, but if you're like me and don't like to show up to a party empty handed I'd suggest getting a small gift off their registry (if they're even registered yet) or a bottle of wine or champagne along with a congratulatory card.

    At our engagement party, we weren't expecting gifts, but almost everyone gave us something. We got a lot of bottles of wine and champagne, picture frames, vases, wine glass set, a punch bowl, and even some cash gifts. We were so surprised!

    Yeah, engagement parties aren't gift giving events in my social circle either. I'd probably just bring a card and a bottle of wine or something, just because I hate feeling empty handed going anywhere.

    Absolutely bring a gift. I'm from Long Island too and it's customary to bring a gift. Either bring something for the couple like a crystal vase or something like that OR a check. 
    My aunts and uncles all gave me a check for $250 each for my engagement party. My grandparent's gave me $1,000. Friends brought gifts from the registry.
    You will be embarrassed if you don't bring a gift. You bring wine to a dinner- not a wedding related party
