August Honeymoons

Hi, I'm pretty new to this board!!

We're getting married in July and having trouble deciding on a honeymoon location. Since it's hurricane season in the caribbean, we were thinking something like Alaskan cruise (in August) but then we found a Living Social deal for a trip to Fiji...

Do you guys have any suggestions for August honeymoons?

Re: August Honeymoons

  • budget? for how long? interests? dislikes?

<div>Oops... I guess my post was pretty broad... Budget, let's say $5,000. Time about a week to 10 days. In terms of interests, We like to do outdoorsy stuff (hiking, zip lines, being in the water, seeing a volcano). Not so hyped about shopping. </div><div>
</div><div>The Fiji deal is about $6k for nine days... </div>

Don't avoid the carribean just because it is hurricane season.  We are getting married and taking our honeymoon in late august/ early september.  We are getting some incredible deals because it is the off season down there.  So with the money you save, buy yourself some travel insurance and relax!  Typically you want to stay in the southern part of the carribean (Antigua or St. Lucia)

My FI sent me this (he is a meterologist) about our St. Lucia honeymoon.  You set the time of year and the location and it will give you all the hurricanes in the past 20 years.  There was 1 that went over St. Lucia...that is a gamble I am willing to take..

  • We budgeted about the same for our honeymoon, and actually almost went with Fiji, but the flight time was a dealbreaker.

Have you looked into any of the Hawaiian islands?  Sounds like Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island would be a good fit for your interests.  And you would only be looking at a 5 hour flight time instead of 12 hours to Fiji.

</div><div>That's a good point... We have been on one vacation together, and it was to Hawaii... oh I lie... we went on a three day cruise too. </div><div>
</div><div>Maybe I should look into the caribbean again. I have been to Jamaica a bunch of times and I just remember awful humidity in August! But I hadn't thought about the travel insurance!  </div><div>

  • I agree that you shouldn't write off the Caribbean because of hurricane season. You can get trip insurance (trip insurance for our vacation to Cali this summer was only $100 for both of us total), plus the chances of actually having a hurricane happen while you're there are incredibly slim.

But I would also second Hawaii. I know you have been there, but perhaps you could check out another island(s) since they are all so different? We went to Oahu last July and absolutely loved it. The weather was so mild compared to what we were having in IL and ith as all the outdoor activities you said you want.

  • I've been to the caribbean 5 times in August.  We go then b/c my fiance is in education and also to get the best deal. We've had great weather:

DR: 7 nights, rained last day
Jamaica: 6 nights, rained last day
Aruba: 7 nights, rained first day (poured, and they say it hardly rains in Aruba)
    Bahamas: 8 nights, one sprinkle
St. Lucia: 8 nights, rained maybe 3 days?  Gross weather overall though.

No hurricanes - knock on wood.
  • We're thinking about going to Bermuda, the aren't as affected by hurricanes, I'm not sure what they have in terms of outdoorsy activities
  • I'm also taking my honeymoon is August, we we are hitting the south carribean because it is actually outside of the hurrican belt. Fingers crossed! Ditto on the insurance as well, cheap and worth it.

  • I'm bias towards Fiji since that's where we honeymooned and it's definitely the trip of a lifetime. Pics and review of our HM in my married bio under the honeymoon tab.

Ditto pp's don't write off the Caribbean just because it's hurricane season. The chances of a hurricane coming through or bad weather are very small. I've been on 2 Caribbean cruises in August and it sprinkled for a few minutes at one of the stops and otherwise we had gorgeous weather the entire time.

A cruise is a great option, because the ship will change it's course due to inclimate weather and avoid the bad weather.

No matter what you choose, get trip insurance! ;)
  • We're going on an Alaskan cruise in August for our honeymoon.
  • We are taking a cruise out of puerto rico to st thomas, st lucia, st kitts, barbados, and st marten in Aug.  Then we are staying 4 days in Puerto Rico after the cruise.  Plus it is not too bad price wise, we are payig $3600 for hotel crusie airfare and transfers from airport to curise and hotel etc. Don't let the Hurricanes scare you! =)
