I need your gardening prowess...

I need a good perennial for a sunny area and another one for a shadier area...I want stuff I don't have to do much too...right now I have one huge white hydrangea bush and two other bushes that I don't love, don't know the name of and don't have the heart to pull up. I just want to fill in the spaces in between...hostas?

    Our front garden is in between full sun and partial sun, and we have a little bit of everything in there. I dont even know what it all is, to be honest, but it all blooms at different times of the summer so that there is always colour. We do have hostas (though I dont like them), allium, lillies (various types), hyasinth, echinacia, ummm... trying to think what else is out there. Theres just tons.

    Your best bet would be to go to a nursery and browse through the perennial section. Thats all weve ever done to find what we want to plant next. It has a sort of an english garden vibe because a little of everything is in there.

    I want the English garden look and every year I dump a bunch of wildflower and butterfly garden seeds in and hope that stuff will come up but they don't come up in the right places...I don't love Hostas either...maybe we will do just that, go an browse through. I just want stuff I can put in and let over grown (should see my hydrangea bush, it is hilarious when I don't cut it back....)

    Just dont plant lambs ear, that shiit takes over. Its a lot of fun to just plant a variety and let its do its thing. I really want to plant some daisies in there and some anemones but I havnt gotten around to it (flowers arent really my thing)

    How well do anemones do? Are they annuals though? I am trying to stay away from annuals, at some point I would like to not have to buy new crap every year.

    My mom was this awesome gardener...she was like you, she would make plans and organize what went where...she had all her plants labelled too and she knew all the names in latin and English.

    On Mother's Day when I called my dad (I was trying to get ahold of his wife) he was in the garden planting trees. I lost it, that is totally what he would have been doing with my mom if she were still alive. Every time I have a gardening question it makes me think of her.  She started gardening after her brother killed himself (I was 12) and she said it was very soul cleansing. I am not there yet though, it doesn't have that effect on me, it just makes my knees hurt.

    I have to agree with her, it is soul cleansing. I find gardening so relaxing and fulfilling, its just a peaceful time with you and your thoughts. It will come in time, every year I do it I get more into it and just enjoy it more.

    I think anemones might be an annual but I havnt really looked into it, I was looking at seeds online and lost interest hah. I get so caught up in my veggies that I dont have time for flowers. I really want to plant a bunch of clematis along the fence, but its like 14$ a pop so that isnt happening any time soon.

    Oh my goodness...my mom LOVED vines...she had them everywhere...plenty of clematis...my dad did the veggie garden. It is something I want to do but not until we are somewhere permanent. I really want a good herb garden. I used to eat chives out of our garden all the time when I was a kid.

    Those are Derek's mom's favourite flowers, and she cultivates the seeds.  I'll see if I can get you some next time we're in the Ptbo area!  Or I'll see if Derek's brother can bring some down.
