Help, I want to switch photographers

So, I've been checking out this one photographer for quite some time and I love her work, but she was expensive and everyone told me I should look at cheaper options.  Well, I thought I found someone.  His packages were much cheaper and the pictures were alright (not as great as the girl I had been looking at).  I had a meeting with him and put a downpayment down.  However, I've been looking at his brochures and realize that the album I want actually brings his price up so that it would be more than the original photographer I wanted to go with.  I'm pretty upset about this and really wish I went with the original photographer in the first place.  I want to ask the second guy if I can cancel his services and get a refund of my deposit.  I know he might not be agreeable to this, but I just made the down payment yesterday and would like to try.  Any advice as to how I should approach him?

Check with your state, there may be a "cooling off" period with signing contracts.  Whatever you do, do it soon!

Depends on the contract you signed, but you need to do it right away!  This is only fair to the photographer too as he is now turning down other potential clients since you booked him.  Good luck!

If you're going to cancel do it soon but be prepared to lose that deposit.  Also, check to make sure your first choice is actually available for your wedding date - otherwise you could end up with neither of them!

    Agreed with above posters!

Most photographers I know (including me) will have in their contracts that they give a week or two period of time for the couple to change their mind and recieve back all monies paid. Or... if that time has expired, the photographer will return the deposit should he book another couple on your wedding date.

I would take the chance at losing your deposit though. If the other photographer blows your socks off... it'll be worth it in the end when you have stunning wedding pictures! :)

But also like others have said... don't wait. Call to see if the woman you really want to cover your wedding is available, if she is: call and cancel the original photographer NOW! It's only fair!

Don't worry about hurting any feelings. If he's a professional, he'll know that couples changing their mind comes with the territory! Wink
