Critique my menu?

Hi All -

We're having our engagement party in Jan.  My parents are hosting it.  However, my mom asked me to help her with the menu.

We are starting at 4 and it will basically be a cocktail party with passed apps and stations.  And booze.  Because we plan to go over a meal period, I want to make sure that we have enough food.  I will have a mix of cocktail tables for people to stand and eat at, couches/lounge areas, and table seating with chairs.   Thanks in advance!

I have a few vegetarians, someone who can't eat protein, and a few who can't do wheat so I tried to make sure there would be something for everyone.

Passed apps:

Wontons (vegetarian)
Meatballs
Filo with pear and Gorgonzola
Tomato tart with goat cheese
Stuffed mushrooms
Broiled figs stuffed with cheese and prosciutto, drizzled with honey
Bruschetta (tomato and or olive)
Arrancini (risotto balls with fontina cheese)

Stations:
Cheese Table: crackers, fig jam, marcona almonds, pate and cornishons, olives, country breads
Sliders: (3) Mini Scallop Bacon Burgers on Petite Buns with Lemon Tarragon Mayonnaise, crab cake slider with shaved fennel slaw, beef slider with blue cheese, carmelized onions and balsamic glaze
Raw Bar:  Oysters (with lemon and mignonette), shrimp (cocktail sauce), tuna poke
Mashed potato bar:  Mashed potatoes served in martini glasses with selection of toppings (cheese, green onions, bacon, olives, sour cream, butter, sauteed mushrooms, ham, etc)
Grilled Vegetables: (served room temp) - onions, red bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant, carrots, asparagus, etc.  Grilled with olive oil and balsamic
Dessert bar - mini chocolate cakes, mini lemon and fruit tart, chocolate covered strawberries

Would you be happy with that at an engagement party? We will probably expect people from about 4-9 and have the apps passed throughout and the stations replenished as needed.

This just made me so hungry. Sound delicious.

I think it sounds like substance wise, you're fine. I would just make sure that there is plenty in quantity. I went to a wedding where this is what they did and their choices were good, but they ran out of food so early that everyone was starving and left.

Wow - can you send me samples of everything you're serving? That menu sounds awesome - I want those figs!!!

The only thing I would point out is that most cheeses don't qualify as vegetarian because they use enzymes harvested from calf stomachs. Your menu is very cheese heavy, and i'm not sure if it's intended for your vegetarian guests. Other than that, it looks delicious! Can I come? Lol

Thanks - I will think about the cheese.  I am 90% sure that all of them eat cheese.  I will ask if it has to be a special kind!

Thanks all - I will definitely be sure to have enough for everyone.

That looks super-yummy.  Especially the mashed potatoes in martini glasses.  I want that NOW:-)

Sweet mercy, I think that your engagement party is going to be fancier than our wedding, haha!

Anything with a mashed potato bar has my vote.

    That sounds amazing.

You may want to consider a veggie or portabella mushroom slider if cheese is an issue with some of your vegetarian guests.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I like lynda's suggestion to have one of the sliders be portabella mushroom or veggie burger (maybe black bean burger).  You have a lot of seafood with the raw bar and the 2 seafood sliders, so I would sub a veggie slider to give a nice, additional veggie option.

Wow! Lots of food.  It sounds delicious.

I do agree that it sounds pretty cheese-heavy.

[QUOTE]Sounds like more food than many weddings have much less an engagement party.

You should come to our weddings.  That is what we normally serve just at cocktail hour.  Then we serve dinner.<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif" border="0" alt="Embarassed" title="Embarassed" />

YUM!  Sounds great to me.  Congrats on the engagement.

Thanks!  I'll ask the caterer about a veg slider and making the arancini without cheese.  I love cheese but they are good without :)
