Need help/ideas for our Native American/Mexican wedding!

Ok, our wedding isn't for two years because I want to wait until after I'm done getting my degree and we currently live in different states. But we are doing a mostly DIY projects so we are going ahead and getting the ball rolling.

So...we are planning a wedding that celebrates our ethnicity and us as a couple. So since my fiance is part Native American we are going to incorporate Native American as our main theme. We have no idea what exactly I am because I was adopted. But since I was adopted into a Mexican family, we want to honor my inherited ethnicity and have Mexican food.

So far I have designed the invitations and save the dates. For the invitations I made a stencil of an Native American border with a dream catcher at the top to which I plan on adding dyed feathers in our colors (so far that's up for debate...I like turquoise, he likes green for the wedding...but we both like black, green, and blue..I also like darker reds and he likes pink..lol).

The save the dates I'm using stamps and colored inks to make a forest-like back ground and a fox and wolf standing on opposite sides of the card. (To play with our Native American names. He is Night Wolf and I am Night Fox. )

We also like bark vases for center pieces. And we found someone who can make us a customized wedding cake topper because we want a humorous cake topper that represents us.

So...we have lots of different elements we would like to somehow incorporate and no idea how to make it flow so it won't seem so...choppy.

I'm just stumped how to tie Mexican with Native American. Or even what colors will go together. Or any craft ideas that would work with that.

Anyone have any ideas please let me know. I'm at a standstill.

  • You might try posting this on your local board.  The people there are more likely to have this kind of information.
  • How do I find the local boards? And I'm in Nebraska but the wedding will be in Indiana. So should I post this in Indiana board or Nebraska? I'm moving to Indiana in about five months.

  • On the left hand side of this page, you will see a column header that says, "Community".  There are seven subheadings.

If you click on "Cultural Wedding Boards", a drop box will be displayed.  Posting some of your questions on the Latino and/or Interracial board may help you with some answers.  Under "Wedding Theme Boards", asking your question about bark vases on the Eco-Friendly or Fall wedding board may get the answer you need.

Local Wedding Boards is the third subheading down the column.  Click on that and then scroll until you find the community you need.
  • We had a mexican wedding.  My partner is Mexican and we really wanted to have a traditional Mexican blowout.  We had a full mariachi band and Mexican food.

If you just want to incorporate touches of Mexican flavor, consider having some latin music, some mexican food (consider having mexican appetizers or pan dulce as part of a dessert bar).

It just depends on how far you want to go with this theme.

Someone who lives in the area may well have a better sense of what local vendors could provide along the lines of Native American/Mexican themes.
  • I would focus on displaying your culture through the food, music, clothes, and customs (jumping the broom, etc). Those items are going to have a bigger impact then the invitations.  No need to go over the top either. Subtle displays are very effective.
