Anyone have a dramatic style change?

I went into wedding dress shopping looking for something like this:

and ended up with this one:

My problem I had originally pictured a closer fitting dress with a little flare accessoried with pearls and a birdcage veil. I wanted to look romantic but not too fluffy.
I'm not a super girly person and I feel like the dress I purchased is very princessy and on top of that I tried on a bird cage veil and it looks rediculous with this dress. Don't get me wrong I love this dress. ( It's also a non-returnable sample) but I'm just at such a loss at how to accessorize this thing. My bridesmaids are no help as they are all even less girly than me!! Any suggestions of what to wear with it?

  • I had a major change in the type of dress I ended up going with. I wanted something more princessy. Something that fit my waist and then flared out from there. I ended up with a fit and flare all beaded gown. But I absolutely love what I purchased. As far as accesorizing that dress, I think a long veil (to the floor) would look amazing with it. I would probably just go with pearls for the jewelry but maybe you could do a sparkly hair piece?

  • My dress was a bit different than what I envisioned. The top elements were the same mostly, fitted, rouched, some beading but not too much. The bottom ended up being different. I was pretty set on a ruffled skirt, and I tried on every ruffled dress I could find, but they were never quite right. So abandoned ruffles, pretty unwillingly, and got one with a tulle skirt instead.

I agree with getting a single layer, feminine veil and somewhat dainty accessories. That should balance your look out.

  • Forgive me, but I think both dresses you posted are rather girly. The only big difference I see is that your dress has a fuller skirt. It's gorgeous.

I would suggest either a long chapel length single layer veil or maybe no veil at all. You could wear a beautiful hair comb or headband adorned with crystals and pearls for some sparkle. Or maybe a lovely silk flower comb. Check out this website for some great non-veil ideas.

A simple necklace and pair of earrings, either pearls or small crystals would be perfect. I'd stay away from a bracelet so that it won't catch on your dress.

It's not uncommon for a style change to occur while planning a wedding. It's because we see things in our head differently than they are in reality -especially when it comes to dresses on our bodies. Don't fret. You obviously found something similar to your original idea that looked better on you in person. Embrace it. And just because you're not a "girly girl" in everyday life doesn't mean that you can't go all out for your wedding. Enjoy it!

  •    I'm trying to embrace it now, I've got the dress and it's beautiful I need to stop worrying :)    After browsing around all day I think I've decided a nice match would be small silver monogram necklace and a cathedral veil and then take the veil off in favor of a crystal comb or flower hairpiece at the reception. And I'll wear my grandmothers pearls as a bracelet or have them sewn into my dress for good luck.
