Getting in Shape

OMG painful lesson learned...

So in March I started walking and recently felt the need to amp it up and start jogging/running. Something I have never done. Well, the other day I jogged 7 miles. I felt great in fact if it hadn't gotten dark I would have kept going.
-
The problem was I wasn't wearing running shorts. I was wearing Egyptian cotton Khaki shorts. It was hot and they are cool. I don't even own running shorts thought they were unnecessary.
-
Boy was I wrong! Now I have rubbed my inner thighs raw. I have areas of raw open bleeding skin about an inch wide and about 4 inches long. I am miserable and can barely walk. LOL I am walking like a saddle sore cowboy with my legs all bowed out. I was trying to avoid buying proper running attire and now I am suffering still and it's been 3 days.

I want to laugh and I want to cry. I really wanted to lose some more weight this week because I am in a wedding and the bm dress came in 2 sizes smaller then I ordered. Not enough time to reorder and not enough material to alter. I lost enough weight that it fit except I can't sit down, so I was thinking in 2 weeks I could drop enough to be able to sit in it.

Now I don't know what kind of exercise I can do to lose weight and not hurt my legs!  Waaa...

  • You could try swimming laps with a kickboard. That way, your legs wouldn't rub together so much because you could focus on keeping them a little separated.

You can pick up something called Body Glide to put on your thighs to keep them from rubbing.

Personally, I just wear a pair of wokrout capri's from Old Navy.  They keep the skin from rubbing.

  • I would wear some longer workout pants that are smooth in the inner thighs. Put some neosporin on the spots and keep them open to air. It'll help with healing.

I wouldn't swim, because the chlorine would definitely hurt! Youch! Just thinking of it makes my inner thighs burn!

Maybe use a stationary bike? Your inner thighs should not rub together if you bike.

If you take this route, I would do breast stroke kicks... Flutter kicks still rub some, but the water is soothing.  Breast stroke kicks are wonderful on the inner thighs.

For running shorts, I swear by Nike and the North Face.  My roommates and I have never had a problem with those!  They are wonderful.  I love the standard Nike running shorts (my roommate loves North Face for these), and I love The North Face compression shorts.  They are a bit pricey, but they pull in the legs a bit (so if you have shaking cellulite like me, it doesn't jiggle), and they are moisture wicking so you don't have to worry about overheating.

For the chaffing I have two recommendations: Vasoline lotion (total moisture conditioning would be best), and deodorant.  Get an extra stick for "down there" and it can help make the area feel a bit better and prevent further issues - sounds weird, but it works!
  • Thanks for the tips guys!!  : D
    I feel better already!!
  • Another tip: Baby oil, then vaseline.  Put it anywhere that might rub.  I used this trick for my half marathon, and I had no chafing at all.

To keep working out, I'd try to use bandages to cover them up.  It should keep it from hurting as much while you work out, and will keep it from getting worse.

    Good luck!

  • omg i hear you - used to happen to me all the time! ditto everything the ladies have already said. and i totally agree about capris or longer/board shorts until that stops happening... i swear that's the best way to avoid it until it's no longer an issue.

on the exercise front, biking (if the chafing isn't all the way up there lol) may be a good substitute while you're healing.

    feel better!!

  • Body Glide is your friend!  You it everytime, use it on the inside of your arms too.  It really works.  Don't worry we have all done it before.

Even running shorts will chaffe you.  If you can handle running pants or capris, those will  help too.

  • I know this is sort of weird- but balmex or triple paste (for diaper rash) would help soothe your sore spots!

This happened to me after I climbed a mountain in NH on vacation and it was the only thing in the cabin that I thought might help- and it did!
