DJ Tax

Hey Ladies!

Just in case anybody is booking a DJ soon or down the road. Make sure your DJ doesn't try to charge you tax. They are excluded from taxes and some charge tax to make extra money. Just a FYI

Re: DJ Tax

  • OMG, thanks for this information.  My DJ certainly had tax figured in his quote.  I'll make sure to mention this to him next time we meet.
  • Ok great to know, thank you!
  • I just checked my contract and my DJ didn't...but thank you for bringing this up.  I never would have given it a second thought if you hadn't!

  • So I did ask my dj why tax was in the quote he provided; he got indignant and was insulted that I even asked! I really thought it was a legitimate question; not sure why he got so upset. I was still going to go w/ him but after he got all upset, we decided to part ways.
  • Can you cite your source? Like a link to the NJ Division of Taxation or something? This seems to be advice not to be taken lightly. We should all just make sure the OP knows what they're talking about and not just take it at face value.

I agree, so I went looking.  According to a few sources, NJ is one of the states where there is no sales tax charge on an entertainment company.  Links:

And this one from the Dept. of Taxation website, which shows Disc Jockey services as "E" or exempt from taxation:

Yeah, not cool.  He got upset because you caught him with his pants down, so to speak.  According to the stuff I read (see the links I posted above) you would be within your rights to report him to the NJ Division of Taxation.
