Honeymoon in Atlantic City NJ

We were originally going to go to New Orleans for out honeymoon this October, but we just dont have the money to make that happen this year... So, my aunt and uncle have a small place in OC NJ and offered for us to stay there instead. We'd still like something a bit "bigger" and are going to spend half the trip in Atlantic City. Ive never been, and was wondering if anyone here has, and if so, do you know of any unique, romantic, exciting places/things to do there? I know theres tons of casinos and such, but I was just hoping to find a few things that are a bit more unique. Thanks!

I got to AC often. I was actually there on Sunday.  It's pretty much a shady run down town with lots of casinos on the boardwalk. I do not recommend venturing off it, with the exception being the outlets, which you should go to in the day time.  I'm not gonna lie- it's a pretty bad area.  I only walk the boardwalk at night with my husband, I don't do it alone.  There are a ton of restaurants, bars, and clubs in the casinos.  There is also a light house but I've never been there.

  • I agree with PP regarding Atlantic City. I have never been in Ocean City, but about a half hour south down the Garden State Parkway is Cape May. It is a beautiful, quaint town with a lot of Victorian homes. They have lovely bed and breakfasts and inns, good resturants, plus Cape May Light House and State Park which is beautiful in the fall. It is definitely a nice romantic place to visit.
  • Thank you so much for the advice! Im definitely going to look into Cape May. Like I said, AC was not our first choice, and we were only considering it because we'll be in OC NJ for part of the trip and AC is close by. Cape May sounds like a much better option!

  • Capy May is beautiful. I has more of what you're looking for.

  • I love Cape May.  There is a wonderful B&B there called The Viginia Hotel that you should check out.  I will add my voice to the chorus that AC really isn't great.

  • Bobby Flay's restaurant in AC is amazing.  Definitely check it out if you do stop in AC.  Otherwise, I agree with PPs' recommendations to do Cape May.

  • Eh, I dunno. FI and I like to drink/gamble so we will hit up a casino if they give us a free night stay. We play the table games, hit up the slots, drink all day, and stuff our faces at the buffet. But if you want somehting quiet and don't like to drink and party, then this wouldn't be for you.

  • We got engaged in Cape May and love it. It's only an hour from AC so if you want to do a night at the casinos you can. In Cape May there are plenty of restaurant options, the lighthouse and other things to see. We took a historic horse and carriage ride around Cape May and, while I wouldn't normally do that, it was really romantic. GL!

  • I know that outside in AC isn't always the greatest but there are some awesome restaurants and great shopping once you are inside the casinos.  If you want a ton of luxury I would definitely stay at the Borgata or the Water club.  Restaurants at the Borgata are all wonderful (Booby Flay and Wolfgang Puck are my faves).  You can also head over to Caesar's and visit The Pier.  There are great restaurants with great views on the top flooer and high end shopping on the lower floors.
While you are at Caesars you can walk down to the street and visit the outlets for shopping.  Each casino offers it's own places for drinking and dancing at night.  I would give it more of a chance than some of the ladies did.
Also a little tip if you're going to be driving around from parking deck to parkingdeck.  Ask for a reciept when you leave one deck and show it when you leave the next one....parking transfer will be free and will save you the extra $$ of parking in a second place.
  • If you do end up with AC, I recommend staying at the Borgata. It's the best hotel/resort there IMO. The Wolfgang Puck restaurant there is good! Also another food rec is Buddakan on The Pier. It's simply amazing!
  • I agree with PP about Cape May.  We spent some time there this summer and that was my favorite part of the trip.  We also went to Wildwoods, Sea Isle City and Ocean City.  We rented bicycles for the day in Cape May and did some shopping. There are also a handful of vineyards/wineries in the area that were really nice. We stopped at Jessie Creek Winery one day, and the owners chatted with us about local places to eat and gave us a tour of their vineyard and showed us how they make their wine. They also run a bed and breakfast there too.

  • I'm going to Ocean City next week - been there for vacation every year of my life!  Aside from the boardwalk and bike rentals, Ocean City has parasailing and ocean boat trips.  The realties always give out these huge bags of coupons and things to do in there that are off the beaten path.  See if you can get one of those or go to Ocean City's website - lots of information on things to do aside from the beach!

As for Atlantic City, it's not awesome... but if you pick a hotel on the boardwalk, then everything you want is within your reach.  There's plenty of casinos, hotels, shopping and restaurants.  Many well known chefs have restaurants there including Bobby Flay and the restaunteur Steven Starr.  It's far more metropolitan than anywhere else down the shore.  I would stick to the boardwalk and I have no issue walking it at night.  There are pedicabs to get your around if you have to walk far (the boardwalk is BIG) and if you want to go to the Borgata (which is not on the boardwalk), hop in a cab.  The outlet shopping is also really nice!

Cape May is nice... a smidge boring for my taste, but nice all the same.  There are some excellent restaurants there (The Washington Inn) and the Cape May Winery is there.

    Good luck!
  • As others have said, be aware of your surroundings in AC.  I'd check out Ceaser's.  I love their atrium.  The "mall" in the tropicana can be entertaining for a whhile with various shops & restuarants.   A stroll on the boardwalk in front of the casinos is safe enough if you are careful.  Many hotels have spas . . .get a couples massage.
  • Thanks so much for all the advice!! I really appreciate it! I think we're going to spend a few nights in AC, a few in Cape May, and a few in OC. That way we see everything and dont get bored!
