NWR: Prenatal Vitamins

Hey girls- I know there was a post earlier about who is TTC right after their wedding and I also know there are a lot of moms on here so I was hoping to get some feedback.  I always thought you were supposed to take prenatal vitamins prior to getting pregnant but not sure when to start or what kind to take.  I was going to call my OB but she retired and I haven't picked a new one yet (my yearly isn't until August)  Did you take or are you planning to take prenatal vitamins before your pregnant and if so, what kind did you or will you take?  TIA :-)

Re: NWR: Prenatal Vitamins

  • im taking the gummy prenatal vitamins just because any kind of regular vitamins make me throw up... just trying to get my body used to the them .. not TTC until 6mo after the wedding (ahh thats a year from now...scary)

  • I'm not TTC, but I think a good multi vitamin can't hurt. Look for something with 100% of your daily values and especially folic acid. Watch ones with too much iron- they can make you nauseous. And find a doctor before you get pregnant! For example, I'm on a medication that they don't recommend you get pregnant on. If you are on ANY medication, your doctor might need to sort that out. I love the gummy ones!

  • At 52 I'm absolutly NOT ttc (LOL) but I still take a prenatal every day!!! My OB maintains that it is the best thing any woman can do regardless of age. She said just buy any brand (I buy the equate brand from walmart) as they are basically all the same.
  • while I was prego, I started using the gyno recomended prenatals that cost me a fortune by prescription... like $45 a month.... some have too much fish oil, some make you constipated... i had NO probs with the walmart ones.  They are like $4 for 90 or something... I still take them! they make my hair and nails strong. good luck!!

  • My gyn said just taking a folic acid supplement would be plenty; I bought some prenatals just to see if they helped my hair, etc. but of course I bought ones w/ iron (more than a daily multivitamin anyway), and yeah, can't really poop too well w/ those (sorry!). So if you're not anemic, skip those. ;)

Not TTC, but every woman who is of the age & circumstance where they MIGHT become pregnant should be at least taking folic acid supplements.  The first few days/weeks of pregnancy are the most important because the nueral tube is forming (which later becomes the spine and brain) during that time.  You obviously want to do whatever you can to protect those, so taking the folic acid will help that tremendously.  It's been a few months since I've graduated college, but I'm pretty sure folic acid reduces the chance of nueral tube defects up to something like 70 or 75%.  The most common nueral tube defects I remember learning about are spina bifida and anencephaly-- where parts of the brain/skull are missing... it's some serious stuff.

Wow.  Sorry I just became Dr. Jacqui.  My major was in child and family development, with an intense focus on pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood.  It's kinda my passion :p

But yes, you should definitely be taking at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily.
  • I think the rule of thumb is one year before TTC is ideal, 6 months before is great, and 3 months before is the minimum.  I've gotten some gummy prenatals and will probably start taking them soon.  (We will probably start TTC after the holidays, so the end of December, January-ish.)  When I was pregnant with my daughter, (10years ago), I tried the RX prenatals and they gave me diarhea on top of the morning sickness, so my OB told me to switch to two flintstones a day.  From what I've read it's most important to have a vitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic acid and not to exceed 100% of vitamin E.  Too much vitamin E is shown to cause issues with the baby.

  • Like PP said folic acid is the most important pre-pregnancy.  A while ago I was feeling beyond fatigued (sleeping 13 hours on weekends without waking up or an alarm!) and did some research.  Some oral contraceptives if you have been on them can cause vitamin deficiencies that are necessary to conceiving.  I was vitamin B deficient.  I'd go on prenatal vitamins, and, if you are on OC get off of them as soon as you feel comfortable (and use a non-hormonal contraceptive until you and FI actually want to start trying) so your body can regulate and to make sure it isn't causing any vitamin problems.  Also, your diet weighs in a lot too.  Even if you aren't overweight, eating healthy is important (some people are skinny despite McDonalds drive thru visits).  Cutting out things like alcohol and caffeine are HUGE helps too and important since you don't know the exact moment you get pregnant and those can hurt the baby.  HTH
  • We are TTC after the wedding currently I am taking sisu multi expecting.. It's pretty awesome. My naturopath on the other recommended Douglas lab prenatal vitamin!
