How do travel agents work?

This is kind of embarrassing, but I'm in my mid-20's and I have no idea how they exactly work. I've planned a few vacations, but only really simple stay-in- one-place type vacations. FI's aunt and uncle (kind of rich) have *very* generously offered to pay for a honeymoon to Europe for us. I know right, it's pretty awesome and generous and it's a way nicer vacation than we could afford.

So, we are plannning on going to Germany/Austria for about 10 days after the wedding. They want us to go to a travel agent. What will the travel agent do for us? Do they do both the flight and hotels together? Can they make us some kind of package that has hotels included? What about multiple hotels in different cities and potentially leaving and arriving out of different cities? I think his aunt/uncle suggested a travel agent in order to make it less complicated with multple fights/hotels. Can they do this package type thing?

Yes, the Travel Agents, will take care of pretty much every detail soup to nuts. You tell them what you want, where to go and they will try to get you the best rates, dates and hotels for your budget. I would suggest asking a couple (this is what we did) to price compare and feel out who would be the best for what you're looking for. Also, price them out yourself to see if you find better deals, most of the time they will meet or beat what you find.

<div>Ditto. I only went to one TA, but we took her rate and compared it to all of the travel websites (Expedia, Orbitz, etc) and she ended up having the better deal. Also, the advantage to using a TA is that they've most likely been to the place (or at least the region) you're looking to go and can give a personal opinion/recommendation.</div>

Great thanks girls! I guess a TA might be the place to start since we will def be staying at at least 2 hotels and probably flying into outof different cities. I'll be sure to double check online and make sure we are getting a good deal. Jessa, what TA did you go to? Im in center city.

I would recommend you check with at least two TA's. The advantage to using one (if you are not travel savy) is they set eveything up for you so all you have to do is show up at the right time/place! They also have/give you contact #'s to use in case of any problems that could come up while you're away. It's kind of like having a safety net & if neither you ot FI are travel savy it would be benifical to at least talk to them.
