Will this sound cheap?

So, I just got the wine choices from our caterer, and since it is apparently wedding food day, I thought I'd chip in.

He has a great selections of wines available, but this thing is costing me so much already, would it sound really cheap if I told him just to go with the cheapest options for red and white?

Re: Will this sound cheap?

  • I don't think so!

Our venue is having us select wines in "price ranges" and I'm definitely keeping to the least expensive range which is $16-19 - more than I pay for myself at the liquor store.

  • I don't think so. The cheapest wines are usually House Wines which to me are pretty good.

  • No but I would taste them to make sure they don't taste like crap!  However with that being said one of my favorite pinot grigios is a $4 bottle from Trader Joes.  I would just find out what wine they have and ask to taste it before you select it.

<div>Good call. I'll see if they have the same wine in the shop around the corner (that he often works with) sometime soon, and have my friends taste it. FI doesn't like wine and I'm not allowed to drink alcohol at the moment unfortunately :(.</div>

  • Unless your guests are wine enthusiasts, they probably wouldn't even know the difference (unless, of course, it tastes like crap...then again, I've had some pretty gross wine that was expensive). Go with what you can afford.  I'm sure your guests will just be happy to have wine as an option at all

  • Anyway, glad to hear that you ladies don't think there's anything wrong with this.

I just got a complete quote from our caterer - previous quotes didn't have all prices included, like wines, taxes and service. And while the wines are a nice surprise, the tax and service not so much. Everthing added up, it is about 1250$ more than budgeted. Ouch!

  • I don't think you're being cheap... wine can be super expensive! Ditto PP about trying it first just to make sure it's palatable :) I'm thinking that most people choose the least expensive options at their weddings.

  • What your guests don't know won't hurt them, amirite??  Cool

(but seriously, taste it first, just for peace of mind)

  • i agree with the others!! our package just includes chef-selected wine options....we are hoping they are good but there is really nothing we can do about! if they aren't good, there will be plenty of liquor for everyone to drink instead of wine :)
  • Nah, do what you want. I'd recommend tasting first. You're not going to tell your guests how much the wine costs anyway!

  • I won't be able to taste our wine.
  • Nope, not at all...and we don't get to taste our wine either!!
  • Nope.

our venue sent us their wine lists.  We went to the liquor store and bought the 2 cheapest reds and the 2 cheapest whites on the menu and I'm going to try them side by side and compare them to find out which we like the best between each set.  There's only a difference of $1 between the two reds and the 2 whites so..

I would just say try them.  We are probably going to cheap out on wine if we even do a wine pour at the tables.  Just make sure they aren't awful!

    Thanks all!

I'll definitely try them, although at this point we're considering changing caterers (help!) or eloping (nah).

  • That's fine! I'd do the same thing! lol

Ugh I don't even know what we're doing about alcohol yet...probably hiring a bartender and then purchasing our own case of wine/booze. We'll be going with the cheap stuff!! (I usually think the cheap stuff tastes better, anyway.)
