Recipe Shower

I received an invitation to a friend's shower, and it asks to bring a favorite recipe for the bride.  It even has a little card with the bride and groom's name to put it on.  My question is, for anyone who's ever been to a shower like this, is the recipe supposed to be an alternative to a gift?  Or do I still bring a gift?  I don't mind at all getting my friend a gift, but I'm just wondering what the "norm" is.  TIA!

Re: Recipe Shower

  • In showers I have attended, I would bring a gift as well.

When choosing a recipe, I have done one of two things.  I would look at the brides registry, find a kitchen item I am interested in buying for her, and pair my recipe with that item.  Or, I would choose my favorite/best/easiest recipe, and try to pair it with an item from the brides registry.  Depending on the budget, I might even try to make a basket up with the non perishable ingredients for the recipe.

  • My MIL threw me a recipe shower a few weeks ago. The guests were mainly her friends whom I hadn't met. Maybe about 1/4 of them brought a small gift in addition to the recipe. I think you could go either way. But especially if you know her well, something small from her registry, as PP said, would certainly be nice.
  • Thanks ladies!  I just looked online and can't find a registry for her.  Hmmm.  I might just do the non-perishble ingredient idea, or buy a cookbook.

<div>This is a cute idea--I'd probably do something similar, or like Retread said, call the hostess :)</div>

I went to one years ago and gave her a recipe for my favorite main dish plus a 9 x 13
bakiing diah, spatula and oven mitts that she had registered for.  Everyone else did the same
