How many is TOO many Must-Haves?

Okay, so just a little background: 5 BM & 5 GM. 1 FG (FI's daughter) & 1 RB
My parents and stepparents (4 total)
His parents
I have 5 siblings (2 married)
He has a sister
I have 8 grandparents. He has none.

So I was looking at the list of must have shots. They are all pretty normal (ie: bride &groom, B&G w/ G's parents...) I keep adding shots to the list. My photog said she would love if I made a list. So far I have 37 must-have formal family shots for the church and 7 must-have candid shots (his daughter/FG holding the rings in her hands)

Is that too many formal shots? I mean, I know that the pictures won't take a lot of time. My cousin's wedding was very formal and the pictures only took about half an hour, which I think is a good amount of time for people to be at the reception site for cocktails and chitchat before we arrive. We are planning on a first look at a different location so we get 99% of our nice outside pictures out of the way before the ceremony.

Any input into this?

PS. While I'm asking, when I give the list to the photog, should I use "Bride Mom & Bride Step-dad" or "Sue* & Bob*" to identify the persons in the picture?

I think it's too many for half an hour. Does the half hour begin the second the ceremony ends? You will hug a few people, need to round up some family members, the photog will take a few test shots etc. imagine 30 seconds per shot to get people lined up looking nice, picture, have them exit the photo and arrange the next group- you're over 16 mins for just family formals and haven't even started pics of the bridal party or any of you and your fiancé. If your ceremony ends on time and you start right away. It's not realistic. With that said, I dont think that means you should have to sacrifice some of the photos you want. Can you do some of them before the ceremony like you with your girls and parents etc. Honestly, your best bet is to discuss timing with your photographer but I presume anything less than an hour afterwards will be too tight.
  • You'll need more than a half hour to do 37+ family formal photos. An hour at least.

As far as how you should word it (with names or titles), just ask your photographer what she'd prefer. We're all different.
  • I'm either losing my mind or you changed some things in your original post? :) If all you need to do really afterwards are the family photos then I think you're likely correct that half an hour is enough time.

I think names are easier than titles not necessarily for the photographer but so when he or she is reading it outloud to the group the group gets it. If you want and are totally type A like I am, you could always include a "key" at the bottom explaining that Bob = Stepdad etc.
  • For future brides, I recommend that as long as you have the time and aren't cutting too much into your enjoyment of the reception, it's better to have more shots on your photo list than less. I'm sorry I didn't get one with just my aunt and uncle, for example. I was trying to streamline, but I'm sure they would have liked to have done it and just didn't feel like they could ask me on the day.
  • @IveGotThisFriend - Please don't dredge up posts that are nearly 2 years old.  If you need to, start a new post.

Then start a new post.  It's incredibly annoying when someone reups an old post because those people are usually no longer active on the site.  People will start to comment thinking it's a "new" post, only to later realize they're responding to people who are no longer here.  It's just common courtesy.

Welcome back!  Where've ya been the past 5 months?  Anyways, long story short, there are no mods here!   The regulars try and do their best to guide people who might not be familiar with certain things, but we have no special powers and can't close threads.
