Geology favors?

My FI and I are both geologists, most of our friends are too. We thought it would be cool to give out little chunks of amethyst as favors. I come from a little Canadian town right next to a big amethyst mine and you can buy it at less than a dollar for a small low grade rock at the little shop not a mile from my parents’ house. Quartz is sort of our underlying theme and I'm giving his family a clock what is made from a polished slice of quartz, I haven't decided what variety yet. We are also making centerpieces with really mature sand (therefore quartz rich) and rocks from all the places we have worked so it won't be something random.Would our non-geologist friends and family think this tacky, cheap or just plain un-cool? We were going to have them at each place setting so people would know they are for them. So far everyone we've asked (we want everything secret from most) have said "whatever you want" which is making us worried they think it's a little too geology-nerdy and won't appreciate it.

I think it sounds great! I don't think anyone will think i's tacky at all. Half the time people leave the favors on the table anyways, so I wouldn't worry about it. Its unique and people will remember that more than a box full of chocolates.

In all honesty, I'd rather have the chocolate. It is a cute idea but your favors should be something your guests will want to take home rather than only something that reflects what you do for a living. I dont' want to sound harsh or anything, but I think you will have a lot of amythyst (which I think is pretty) left on tables. All it would do in my house is collect dust and it serves no purpose.

I do not put this in the tacky column at all, but I do think the majority of your guests have no need for a piece of amythyst.

I think that is a good risk. I would probably take the amethyst and H's and think that I could make some jewelry with it. Then it would sit on my dresser for about a year... and then I wouldn't know what to do with it.

Have you considered chocolate rocks? http://chocolaterocks.com/
    Or rock candy?
That would still fit in your theme.

I'd rather have the chocolate. The chunk of amethyst, while cool and fitting at the time, would just become another trinket collecting dust. The rock candy or chocolate rocks is an excellent idea!

Thanks for the suggestions, I guess I forget that not everyone has a rock collection. I've been surrounded by geologists for so long we all have cool ones sitting around the house and boxes of our favourite ones. The rock candy sounds great. About 65% of our guests are geologists or geophysists but I want to make sure the other 45% feel like we understand they don't really get it and love them regardless. The rock candy sounds like a blast and also totally us, we love poprocks and those "rock" popsicles but I had completely forgotten about them, thanks a ton!

In this case I agree with pps. I'm not in the camp that says that all favors have to be edible (ours are not), but I think that most people would prefer chocolate rocks or rock candy to a real rock as a favor.

I think all of it is very cool (but I am a geologist, too, and have a lovely rock collection as well - only 1 amethyst specimen, tho). :)

While I think your idea is cool and different, as a guest, I'd probably throw it away a few days/weeks after the wedding. Sorry to be harsh!

Maybe incorporate the amethysts into your centrepieces, and go with the edible 'rock' candy for your guests - your geologist friends will get a total kick out if it!
