Invite you to the Marriage or the the Wedding

Most invitations invite you to the marriage. Why don't they say to the wedding? Seems as though the marriage is for enternity while wedding is for the event. I do not know which to put on my invitation.

If they're wording it "invite you to witness the marriage of" then that makes sense. It's a wedding, but they're not getting "weddinged" they're getting married. Probably referring to the actual action of getting married, rather than the actual long-term marriage or the title of the event at which such an action occurs.
