Dress Shopping Trip Tomorrow!

I just wanted to share that I am so excited to go on my first dress shopping trip tomorrow! I've been watching a lot of SYTTD and I'm going with a big group (mom, stepmom, and 5 bridesmaids, yikes), so it scares me a little. BUT, I know what I want and they know me pretty well, so I oftentimes hear them say, "That is so you." :o)

On another note, since I had booked my appointment well in advance, I contemplated inviting my FMIL for a long time...up until recently.

We haven't had the best relationship, and if you know anything about Filipinos, then you know they demand a certain amount of respect and anything you do/say/don't say that offends them is considered disrespectful.

Ahh, I want to vent so badly, but there's just too much...really.

I consulted with both my mom and stepmom and they both told me I didn't have to invite her if I didn't want to, especially if it would make me feel uncomfortable. I'm glad that they understand where I'm coming from. Both my mom and SM are younger than my FMIL, so they understand the generational differences and I'm glad they do! After talking with them I don't feel so obligated to have her around.

It's so unfortunate and I wish I had a better relationship with my FMIL, but I'm not the only one. Her partner and my FBIL both have strained and dysfunctional relationships with her.

Sorry for being such a downer. I know this is supposed to be a happy time, so I'll leave with this: DRESS SHOPPING TOMORROW! Sealed

Dress I want: lace trumpet dress with sweetheart neckline, chapel or no train. Birdcage veil for the windy Olowalu venue...but, I am definitely keeping my options open! Who knows, I might find a completely different style that I fall in love with...

I dreaded going but actually enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy it as well! The dress you want is very similar to the style I got. Good luck and remember don't knock it till you try it!

So exciting, take your camera with!!  And - don't be afraid to try on dresses that you think aren't 'you'.  I never would have tried on my dress cause I just didn't think it looked like me on the mannequin and when I put it on it was definitely mine!

And, I don't think that MIL's are necessary for dress shopping.  This is your moment with your Mom & Stepmom, she doesn't need to be involved.

Congratulations and I hope you find what you're looking for!

And I totally feel you on FMILs and Filipinos. (Feel free to vent!) I wish me and my FMIL had a better relationship. And I thought we did until the whole wedding thing came into play. It's like all the things that I felt were quirks about FI and his family have become so much bigger! We had a few snaffoos in the planning process and I finally had to promise myself that I wasn't goinig to get into it and let FI handle talking about everything with his mom. I will not talk to her about the wedding. She went to the shower and will be at the rehearsal dinner get her h&m done with us and that's it. No dress shopping or anything. This is the only thing I could thing of to keep us on good terms in the future.

THIS!  Keep an open mind and you may be surprised.  Also, don't expect for it to be like it is on TV -- gushing tears, the whole room falls silent, angels descend from the heavens, etc.  And also don't be discouraged if it takes a while to find the dress.  TV shows make everything so dramatic and such an emotional experience.  My mom never cried, I never cried, and other than me really liking the dress and eventually comparing all others to it, there weren't really "THIS IS THE ONE" signs.  Just saying, don't set yourself up for a fairy tale shopping experience because it's not always the case.  And yet you can still find a perfect dress for you without it all.

Also, if you watch SYTTD, you will know the #1 rule is picking your audience carefully.  The fewer trusted advisors, the better.  So, don't worry about not inviting FMIL.  I didn't invite mine, and my mom was 1) fully understanding and 2) thankful.  hehe.

Good luck, and take lots of pictures!!

Have fun don't be afraid, take your camera!  I went to four bridal shops and when the fourth one came around I was so burnt out on wedding dresses.  But I really wanted to get my dress before the craxy holiday season came about.  It was either end of summer or wait till Januaury which I think would be too late to start looking.  I'm serious about Sept.-Dec. being a chaotic time.

Take those who you know will support you and be honest with you.  When I went to try on wedding dresses I took my best friend and FI.  On one occasion I took one of Fi's younger sisters because FI and my bestfriend couldn't make it.  I do advocate what AKWB said about trying on dresses you don't normally think would look good on you.  The last dress I tried on was one that the sales lady suggested and it turned out to the the dress for me.  Keep an open mind.

Honestly NO ONE in my family or any of the females in my FI's family care about the wedding dress or the shopping and purchasing.  I think the only one excited was me and my best friend and FI were supportive and completely honest about what they liked and disliked about the dresses I tried on.

    Can't wait to see pictures!

Yes! These are great suggestions for dress shopping from Tanq and Motolyn! I came in with 15 pictures of dresses with ruffles and such and came out with a mermaid dress with a silver belt. It all came down to what looked best. I knew it was the one because I kept comparing everything else to that dress. No tears or anything though.

I agree with what everyone else is saying.  I think I hit every store in the city, and tried on way too many dresses.  I tried on mine 4 times before buying it, and it wasn't that it was the "one", but everything else eventually got compared to it, and it was the one I liked most.  You'll find one though.  I miss shopping now that I actually have a dress adn that stress is gone!!

"It all came down to what I looked best in." Very true. 3 weekends of looking and the last one my daughter had just become engaged.  I took her a dress that she was not interested in and she burst into tears as soon as she saw herself in it. I on the other hand finally found mine a few hours later and it was more like this looks good on me I'll take it. Really go with an open mind because most brides seem to get something that they never thought was there style or dream dress.  Good luck and hang in there with the FMIL.

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for all the advice!

Today was really fun. The bridal salon was a little small, so with my group of 6 people, a toddler, a baby, and me (yes, a big group) everyone was squeezed in, BUT they were all honest and the 2nd dress I tried on, everyone said that it was very me. Everything I tried on after that I compared it to that dress, BUT I didn't want to commit, yet.

My consultant also picked out a few dresses for me, but they didn't look good on me. Shape, yes. Style, no.

I want to go to a couple other bridal salons, so I think I'll do that in the next few weeks. I know there's a dress that is for me, so I want to see more. The one I liked the most today had a longer train than I hoped for, and that's not what I want. So if I can find a dress that needs the least amount of alterations, the better!

Good experience, though! I can't wait to try on more dresses, but I hope I find one sooner than later because I do get restless shopping! lol...

So, while browsing for dresses online, I found out that one of the bridal salons I wanted to hit up is having a Maggie Sottero trunk show this weekend! One of her dresses caught my eye in the early stages of planning, so I am sooo excited and I hope they have the dress!

Just thought I'd share...! I'm just really excited about it! :)
