Where to register and when?

I am getting married in about seven months and was wondering when would be the appropriate time to register? Also, I can't choose where to register. My choices are bed bath and beyond, target and jc penny's. If you can tell me your experience and which stores are better that'd be appreciated!

Re: Where to register and when?

  • I'd say you should start registering now. I don't think there's too strict of a timeline on registries, as long as you watch out for seasonal items and keep an eye on things that might be discontinued.

BBB is really popular on these boards, but I personally don't like the store and didn't register.

Target has a pretty bad reputation for registry issues.

We did Macy's, Crate&Barrel, and Bloomingdales and have had no major issues.
  • Crate & Barrel registry is so easy & they have fun register events with snacks and demonstrations of some of their items... loved it!

We're doing Target, but only for things we can't get at C&B- camping stuff & board games :)
  • Target has lots of wonderful things, but their registry has issues! It didn't always mark things as purchased when they were, and kept having the wrong pictures up for stuff.

  • You can register as soon as you're engaged, IMO. I got asked about my registry as soon as I announced my engagement, even without an engagement party or STDs or anything. Just check it periodically for discontinued things. I check mine weekly, will start with every 2 weeks now, but that's mostly because there's things I only want on there while they're still on sale. When the sale ends, I take them off. That's my piccadillo, though.
  • I agree that it's fine to go ahead and register now, just keep an eye on it. We are registered at Crate and Barrell, Macy's, and BBB. I prefer Crate and Barrell as their site is easy to use and I think their products are the highest quality and reasonably priced. We added the other two for variety but have less items on thoses registries. I am kinda perplexed by Macy's pricing sometimes and I often find the quality at BBB a little lacking, so we were pretty selective at those places.

<div>Macy's pricing is definitely weird. I didn't notice it until we registered there, but the price for items seems to change every week. I feel terrible knowing that some guests are going to buy something from the registry with way lower prices than other guests depending on when they shop. It's weird.</div><div>
</div><div>But other than that, Macy's has been fine :)</div>
  • Yeah, Macy's seems to regularly have sales where things are about 50% off, or even more. My towels are 50% or so off right now. My pillows were when we registered.

For pillows and towels, it's no big deal to me. I do have this funny piccadillo with the $100 price-point, though. I won't exceed it for a single item that's not furniture. So bedding sets, All-clad and Le Creuset cookware, go on and off my registry depending on what's on sale.

Interesting fact: Just a few years ago, sites like theknot were advising brides to force stores to lock-in prices and availability when we registered, with registry contracts. I'm guessing the stores balked and offered online registries as an alternative. And so in one more area the business of weddings is bad for brides and guests and good for retail corporations. Ugh.
  • I've heard a lot of bad things about Target's registries (technical problems).

We registered at BB&B, Macy's and Crate and Barrel.

  • We are registered at BBB, Willaims-Sonoma, and Macy's.  Nothing has been bought off our WS or Macy's registery yet.

I cannot say enough good things about BBB.  They have awesome customer service/return policies and they have those nifty 20% off coupons that save you (and your guests) money.

  • I would say to register at 1-3 places. I've also heard some bad things about Target's registry, although we had no problems with our baby registry there. We registered at BBB & C&B.

  • I'm not a fan of any of those three places - Target and JCP have terrible registries, and I just dislike BBB a lot.  That said, if you're set on those three I'd go with BBB.

I ditto PPs about Crate and barrel - it's wonderful.  I also like Macys, and the sale thing doesn't bother me because I never have to wait more than a week for things to go on sale there.

  • We are registered at Macy's and C& B. The only thing with C&B is that if you register now, most of their current seasonal stuff (including popular items in certain colors) probably won't be available by the time of your wedding and shower. There are certain things we are registered for now that we will have to update/change before our wedding.

Also, at Macy's, if you have a credit card there, you can tie it to your registry & get 5% of your registry purchase prices in return as a gift card (or something like that). You also get 10% in rewards on all the purchases you make on your card.

The majority of our registry is with BBB.

We also registered at Macy's for crystal, Williams-Sonoma for some higher-end kitchen pieces, and Pottery Barn for decorative items.

I will say that with both Pottery Barn and BBB, we have had issues with items on our registry suddenly going out of stock or becoming "unavailable online". Because of this, we switched some of the Wilton Armetale pieces we wanted from BBB registry to Macy's. I'm glad we did, because within about a week, we received the one we wanted the most.

I've noticed that Macy's seems to have a lot of the exact same stock as BBB, but at much higher prices. For example, the Wilton Armetale piece that was $99 at BBB and every other store that carried it was listed at $143 at Macy's. Then they put it on a "limited time only!" "sale" for the $99 that it costs anywhere else. I've noticed this with a few other items too. So, I tend to think that they significantly mark things up, and then when they go on 'sale,' they're actually at the market price... So people think that they're getting a great deal, when really they're just paying what the item would cost them anywhere else instead of getting overcharged by 50% or more.
