Anyone Want to Share A Unique Guestbook Idea (or give me an opinion on mine?)

OK so I don't like the idea of a traditional guest book that people sign.  I mean what do people do with those after the wedding anyway?  Do people actually page through them later and say:  "Oh yes, Aunt Betty, I remember you being there?"  I guess I didn't think it was very useful.

So my idea is this:  I bought a generic $14.99 poster in B&W of Las Vegas.  I was thinking of having people put down one word that describes something that they think we'll need in our marriage and then sign their name after it with a black sharpie.  Almost like a recipe or prescription for happy marriage.  For example:  Patience, Aunt Jean   or Humor, Dad

Then I thought I could frame the poster when we get home and hang it up somewhere where we can both enjoy it later.

Does this sound like a weird idea?  Anyone have another suggestion of how I can use the poster?
TIA

I like the idea a lot!  But I would just let the guests write what ever they want.  Most would probably like to leave at least a 'congrats' or 'God Bless' or "what an amazing couple".  It'd be frustrating to me to be limited by one word.  If you really wanted to do the one word deal, I wouldn't make it your 'guestbook' like it seems you are wanting to poster for.  I'd make the one word thing a 'fishbowl' or something like that.  I feel like a guestbook is supposed to allow guests to express themselves just a wee bit more than one word.

Just out of curiousity, what is supposed to be the "purpose" of a guestbook?

So that they can say "Congrats" and years down the road you can open it up and remember who was at the wedding :)

I did a Photobook so that it was not a Traditional "Guest Book". I also like your idea of the poster.

That sounds like a good idea, I like it too. We are having a signature photo frame for guests to sign, this way we can put it up in our house. I think it's just to know/remember who attended the wedding and so they can wish you well.

I did a photobook by Peter Lik as my guestbook. I had a sign about leaving us words of wisdom, etc. Pix in my bio.

We're going to do a photobooth and have them print one copy of the pics for the guest to keep and one copy pasted into a book for them to sign. Double duty as a favor & guestbook. My friend had just did this at her wedding last October and I told her I was totally going to steal it. Everyone had so much fun with it.

I think everyone has some good ideas. I'm a fan of anything that's not going to end up shoved in a box/drawer and forgotten about.

My sister had guests sign a matte that they used with one of their wedding pcitures when they had it framed.

I would recommend encouraging people to sign BEFORE they get too tipsy.

My business partner had a large picture frame that had the two of them in it surrounded by a good 12 to 15 inches of what I'd guess was black aluminum.  All the guests were able to sign the metal area with a 'pen' that was really some type of scratching tool so as you signed, the black would be scratched through to the traditional aluminum color underneath to make what you're writing become visible.

I thought it was pretty cool because it's a photo of them they have hanging on the wall so seeing it and remembering things people wrote is as simple as walking by it in the hall way.  And since it's metal and not paper, no risk to it hanging in the sun light, being cleaned, etc.

We are having a custom aisle runner with a quote we like and after the ceremony we are going to cut it and then have the guest write their well wishes on there for us and then we will have it framed after the wedding.

We are doing vintage postcards and then framing them. The reason this appealed to me is because we will be able to change it up every now and again. the guests will write messgaes on the back and we can have either the picture side or message side showing.

That's cute, but I would be afraid of everyone running around with ink on their hands and it getting all over clothes. Defiantly put out a thing of baby wipes or something to wash the ink off right next to it.

We did "Mad Lib" type advice cards.  (Great idea I got from another Knottie!) Some were hilarious, some were weird and some were really, really sweet!
    Good Luck!

We are having a bowling reception at the Orleans.  So, to go along with the theme, we also purchsed a bowling pin from them, and brining some sharpie markers for our guests to sign the bowling pin.

We're having people sign a record, we'll then frame it, maybe with a wedding picture framed next to it.  The record has "our song" on it too!  And it actually came with two records, so in case there isn't enough room on the one, there will be another.  Music seems to be becoming a theme for our wedding, as we are big music people, so for us it's perfect.  Pics are in my bio of an inspiration pic.

I actually like the one word idea though, it's unique!

we are doing a B&W vegas sign print. Then letting guests sing with a thin silver sharpie.

Love the picture idea, I think your guests will like it too.

@red1115. We are going to do the Mad lib Guest book as well. Did you have any problems getting the older generation to complete it? We had a couple "normal" guest book pages printed just in case. Any recommendations for getting people to participate?

We are huge college football fans so we got a customized jersey with our last name across the back and wedding date as the number. We are going to provide black Sharpies for people to sign it with and then will have it framed after the wedding to hang in the family room.

    theanglfac :

We didn't have any problems with the mature guests (they thought it was fun) and we had the cards on the table next to the escort cards, so people found their seating assignment and then took a Mad Lib card.  I wanted to put one at each place setting originally, but the table was starting to get a little busy, with place settings, favors, flowers, etc.

    Good luck!
