Escorting the mothers

So I have to fill out the paperwork from the church (who's who and doing what and all that).  It asks about who will escort the mothers and grandmothers.  For my family, it's easy. My brothers will seat my mom, stepmom, and grandmothers.  However there aren't any boys/young men on my FI's side of the family.  We were talking last night, and it just makes sense for his dad to seat his mom and his granddad to seat his grandmom.  That wouldn't look weird, right?  I mean as it is, the husbands have to walk behind their wives and their escorts, which is a bit strange.

Has anyone else done this?

Re: Escorting the mothers

  • I don't think anything looks strange. We didn't have ushers, so H escorted his mom to the unity candle and sat her, came back to the back of the church and did the same for my mom. Then he took his place at the front of the church. It worked fine.

  • Thanks, Milk Duds.

Yeah, LVB, I thought about that, too.  Maybe I'll see if Matt wants to do that as another option.
  • we're not doing parents escorting or anything like that. they can walk and now how to sit down.

  • I will most likely have my mum, step-mum, and one grandmother escorted by their husbands. But I have another unmarried grandmother, so maybe I'll have my brother escort her? I still need to figure out FI's family, too, as both his mother is divorced, and one of his grandmothers is widowed.

  • Spoken - I guess it's different when they don't have the significant others to escort them.  Like I said, we just don't have anyone that it would make sense to escort them aside from their husbands.

And FI's granddad is 96 years old, how sad would it be for him to walk in by himself, behind his wife?  He might even need help (although he's pretty spry for a 96 year old!)
  • I think it looks better anyway when the husbands escort their wives (instead of walking behind or whatever) My brother will seat my mom and FH will seat his mom. My Dad's father is still alive and my Mom's mother is still alive so I think we'll ask if they'll walk together (which shouldn't be a problem) but I didn't really see the point of an usher (the church holds about double the amount of people we'll have and I don't care who sits where)

  • My parents are both walking me down the aisle.  My FI's mom is walking down together with her boyfriend, and my FI's dad is walking down together with his wife.  We are having cousins and siblings escort the grandmothers since we have 4 grandmothers and 0 grandfathers.

  • Yeah, docta, it's easier with my grandmothers, since they are both widows.  And my dad will be walking me down, so my baby brother will escort his mom (my stepmom).  My mom is all excited to be escorted by both of her sons.

The only weird side is my FI's.  I think we'll just have it be FFIL with FMIL and FGFIL with FGMIL.

Thanks for all the help and reassurances.  All these stupid little decisions!!!  Just five weeks left!
  • Yeah, to piggyback off this post..I will have FI's dad escort his mom..but what about my mom? My dad will be with me....and I don't have any brothers...so who "escorts" my mom? Or does she just walk down the aisle by herself?
  • You could have the best man do it?  My FI escorted the groom's mother when he was the BM a few years ago.

I don't think that she should go by herself.  What about ushers?  Do you have any boy cousins that are on your mom's side?

  • My grandfather is escorting my mom and Tom's father is escorting his mom and grandmother. You can do it however you want :)
  • My FI has two Bestmen, so the BM are escorting both the mothers. You could try that.
