August 2013 Weddings

Who Is Marrying Us?!

So, how many of you already have your officiant/JOP/pastor etc nailed down?

...because we dont! I'm going to ask my great uncle, as he is a pastor, but he lives in Oregon and our wedding will be in California. If he can't do it, I don't know what to do! I really really don't want to just hire someone...I want the person marrying us to at least personally know myself or FI.

Am I in big trouble with the fact that I don't have someone for sure yet? I mean, August is still 8 months away...

You've got plenty of time! I'd just ask your great uncle soon and go from there. When we met with our pastor recently I noticed we were the only thing on his calendar so far for August.
  • We contacted someone who does weddings (he is a retired mayor) because I was afraid of waiting til the last minute. He was really the ONLY thing that we absolutely had to have (it's not a wedding without an officiant!), so we did it early. I know in some states you can do a Quaker officiant. You have someone apply online to be able to officate your wedding, if you want it to be someone personal.
  • Our venue comes with the officiant. He seems like an alright dude...we emailed a couple of times.

You definitely are not in trouble that you haven't found one yet. Why don't you have a friend get ordained and do it? That's a thing right? ha

  • The pastor from the church I grew up in is marrying us. I think you still have time! No worries.

  • I checked for reviews on my local board before I started contacting JOPs. Quite a few were already booked for our date, however, I did find a reverend with great reviews on theknot local boards that is available. We are actually meeting with him on Thursday, but I have already spoke with him on the phone for about an hour. He sounds amazing & says his goal is for a guest to come up to him & say "you must be a long time friend of X and X, you know them so well". He asked a LOT of questions about us as individuals as well as our relationship/lives. I am very excited to meet him!

Anyway, you should find someone that really shows effort that they want to get to know you (if your uncle can't do it). I definitely think it is important to make it a little personalized anyway - and it lightens the mood a little bit!

    Good Luck =)

  • I'm freaking out, too. I put my fiance on the job of researching officiants, and I'm sure you know how that goes Wink We're also living 6 hours apart right now, so I can't constantly nag him, and it doesn't help that we're both living half a country away from where we're getting married. We're going to visit the city we're moving to/getting married in on Thursday so HOPEFULLY we can meet with a few possible officiants. We're considering just having one of our friends do it, too, but our parents are already a little ticked that we're not having a Catholic wedding, so I don't want to push it. Haha sorry I've been quite frazzled about everything lately! <end rant />

  • You definitely can have a friend get ordained through the universal life church. My fiance did it and he has officiated 5 weddings including his sister's!
