Random gift question?

So I got a package the other day at my parent's house. I opened it up to find it was a gift (from our registry) from a distant relative. Now I'm not sure if this is a wedding gift or engagement gift. (Our wedding isn't until August.) Do I pretend I didn't open it and wait until my shower? Do I send a thank you card now? Can it be any old thank you card or does it have to be a wedding themed one?

I am so clueless on these things, thanks in advance!

Re: Random gift question?

  • Ohhh...good one...are we supposed to wait until our showers to open any gifts that arrive at the home? I am also clueless on this one...

What I would do- and this is me not knowing anything about etiquette- I would write a thank you note, send it back without specifying what it was for (Thank you so much for the toaster! We love to have toast with our eggs in the morning, so it will be super useful. We are so touched that you thought of us and sent this gift, hope all is well!)....

Is this person going to be invited to your bridal shower?
  • I agree with Becky.  Just a general thank you note.  FI's grandma and aunt bought us 2 sets of our silverware from Crate and Barrel about a week after we registered and it wasn't supposed to get delivered to us but it did.  They asked for it back so they could wrap it up and give it to me at the shower.  Not a big deal to us since it was going to sit in our spare room until the shower anyway.  In our case I'm waiting to send the thank you now since we didn't keep it.
  • From what I've lurked on the E board, you should write a thank you note immediately and then wait to use the object until after the wedding.
  • Send a TY asap. Any note card is fine!
    YAY gifts! What was it?

  • Dito PPs...you can definitely open the gift. You're just not supposed to USE it.  And def write the TY note ASAP but don't stress about which TY card to use.

    Sooo exciting :)
  • I agree, send a thank you note right away.  If someone is sending you a gift to your house, they should expecting you to be opening it when you get it.
  • I would open and send a thank you asap. No need to say more than 'thank you for thinking of us, we love it'
