Kids at the wedding

There will be very few kids under twelve on our wedding - not because we want a kid-free wedding, I'd love to have kids of all ages playing around, but because there are very few kids in our families/circle of friends.

There will be a couple of little babies, and our ring bearer of 2 1/2. And then, there are five cousins from two different families: two cousins, ages somewhere between 2 and 6 are spoiled brats (parent's fault, not theirs) and three cousins, ages somewhere between 6 and 12, have superstrict, grumpy parents. None of this should matter, but I think that neither sets of parents will bring toys or other stuff for their kids and it will be pretty boring for them, with so little other kids to play with.

So, I wonder what I should do for these kids. If there where more kids, I'd try to hire some entertainment, but for five kids in a big age range this does not seem worth the trouble. There will be some yard games, like Twister and Jenga, that they might like too. What else do little boys like, apart from the obvious coloring books?

Re: Kids at the wedding

  • For the older kids we are giving out disposable cameras so they can feel like mini photographers and we will send them the photos when the get developed
  • I like PPs idea of the cameras, maybe create an I spy game for them?
you might also get some ideas from this site

you could also get play-doh or modeling clay and get some cookie cutters and have the kids play with that.
how about making sure there's a few dolls and cars for the boys and girls to play with?
large beads and fuzzy wire (crafts store). They can thread their own jewelry. Fuzzy wire is better than string because the beads don't fall off the wire as they put it on. then you just twist tie them close.
If you can get your hands on a portable DVD player, maybe set them up for a movie? Go out and buy a kids movie that just hit the shelves that week, have some treats ready for them and they'll at least be entertained for 90  mins.

  • Hmmm... those are some ideas I definitely like. Especially the movie, I could bring my laptop and set it up for them in the side room. It's just boys, so no beads, but the play dough might be nice for the youngest ones.

  • Oh I like the idea of the portable DVD player.  I am going to put disposable cameras on the tables because I know the adults love them too and they were a hit at another wedding.  I'm thinking of putting coloring books and such in the bags for gifts for the 2 kids the RB and FG.  There are tons of kids in my family but to invite one there would be an additional 30-40 to invite so we decided against it.
