Tipping etiquette

I just got a call from one of my bridesmaids.  She is on her way to pick up her dress from the seamstress.  She wants to know if she is supposed to tip the seamstress, and how much to tip.  I told her that I always have tipped them, and usually base it on how much they do.  Do you guys tip seamstresses?  How do you decide amounts?

Re: Tipping etiquette

  • I've never tipped one...i never used someone who works outside of their home either though..so it may be different..

  • I work in the service industry (on the weekends to pay for the wedding hee hee) and didn't know you were supposed to tip seamstresses?! Is this common? I've only had one fitting so far and don't have to pay until the last fitting, so I'd love to know more before that point.
  • I honestly don't know if you are supposed to.  I just always have, because I do with all service stuff, hair dresser, tattoo artist, the guy from the furniture store that delivered my couches, etc.  Do I tip more than necessary?

  • I didn't tip mine, I didn't even think to. She owns her own business so it never occured to me.

  • I've never hard of tipping a seamstress.  I would definitely not think you would tip someone who works out of their home.  They set the standard rate.
  • I picked up my dress from the seamstress today and I didn't tip her.
