Homework vs. Wedding Planning

It's a constant battle and homework is usually losing.

Anybody have any ideas or "systems" that they use to keep them focused and/or motivated to do homework? Like a reward system or something?

I'm despearate for some advice...I have to keep my grades up for my scholarships' sake. (yes, I know I'm double guilty for being on the Knot when I should be doing homework)

Just know that you're not alone. I too have been putting off my studies for wedding planning. My addiction to pinterest is rediculous! Tongue Out My guilt of putting it off is getting to me a bit too, not to mention the added stress of getting behind...planning is just so much more fun.
  • I'm a type A, super organized person so I tend to work ahead on homework.  But what helps me is remembering that in order to actually have the wedding and get married, I have to finish the homework and graduate.  So all the pinning and planning won't matter if I don't graduate.  Or do what I used to do.  Study, then pinterest.

  • I find that I set little goals for myself.
Ex: If I get the rough draft of this paper done then I will allow myself to do some planning.
Like you said, just set up a reward system. If you enjoy wedding planning so much then make it a reward.

I too have a scholoarship that I need to keep my grades up for. lol I find it very difficult to focus on school related tasks when I can be looking at wedding dresses on TK.

  • Agreed ....

I pick my wedding planning a lot over my homework... but just like everyone said on here you just got to use a system that  fits you ....

When it comes to my homework I love to cram ... soo when i know there a deadline and i am fixing to miss it the wedding planning takes a sideline but if no deadline ...then i don't get the motivation to do my homework... so I have to make deadlines for myself.....

    Good Luck!
  • I usually set up a work and break schedule. do homework for X-amount of time, get X-done and then take a break until X doing wedding things/walking around etc etc. Or like PP said, finish one assignment then allow myself to look at photographers for a little bit.

I totally understand you though, I should be working on a powerpoint right now, and I have two scholarships to keep, but so long as I keep a balance of work and what i really want to do i find that I am more than able to keep up my grades well above where they need to be and still plan away happily!

You are definitely not alone! My fiance keeps getting on me for looking at wedding stuff when I should be doing homework. haha.

What I do is I try to only focus on it on weekends. That's my reward for doing all my work. I think to myself 'If I can get these Genetics problems done now, then I can take a break and do some wedding planning'. I know that might not be much, but that's how I'm handling it.

    Good luck! :)
  • Go to a library to study and do homework.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. It's so nice to be reminded that I'm not alone in this! AND I got a ton done last night - 12 page paper and a professional portfolio, so I'm feeling pretty good. :)

This is good advice...I find if I can try and use real books as much as possible (instead of internet based stuff) for research...it cuts down on the distractions of TK...hahaha. I am definatly guilty of using wedding planning as a means of procrastination when I should be doing homework/studying. USUALLY if I have something coming up thats due, Ill try and get research done early and then go somewhere where I dont have access to the internet/other vices, to get a good chunk of work done where I would otherwise be bored so it forces me to work.

  • It's very difficult to stay focused on school. My best advice, that works for me, is give yourself breaks between schoolwork. Like right now, I have a five page paper in Spanish to write, I'm on page two and I'm taking a break to get on the Knot and just goof off. Short breaks are like power naps in my opinion. You don't end up with a headache near the end of a project. :)
  • I know how you feel! I want to plan because it's way more fun than writing a 60 page business plan.
BUT I also know that if I don't graduate (I have 2 weeks left) I won't be getting my dream wedding. You have to make sure school comes first.
I do the same thing as other posters; I set goals and once I accomplish them I plan a little or watch some wedding show. It's nice because I'm more motivated to get my work done, and I get to plan while relaxing.
  • I have been in school and planning my wedding too. Heck I am graduating exactly two weeks before my wedding. I did most of my big planning in between semesters. I am taking six classes and I knew that with my heavy course load I couldn't really afford to slack much.

Lately since the wedding is three months away, I've been pulling late nights and trying to fit everything into one day. I am just grateful my fiance keeps me balanced!

  • This is such a common problem!

It is just too exciting to do all this planning. I would love to see what other people come up with to fous.

  • It happens to me all the time.... Just try to focus and set aside time for each item..... its hard.. but you want to do well :)
  • These are such great ideas! I'm always getting in trouble with my fiance for planning instead of doing homework. I still have a year of school left and while I'm paying for school my parents are paying for the wedding and have said I have to have my BA before my MRS. lol. I think I might take the advice and start doing TK as a reward system.
