1920's theme wedding

hi
i am doing a 20's themed wedding and wanting to know if anyone has any
ideals how to pull this together i'm having trouble finding a dress from that  era that i like also what kind of center peice would look best. Thinking about using matini glasses with flowers in them any ideals would be helpful.

thanks

  • I would hit the internet hard to get idea's. Maybe even take a day to go to the library and browse through some history books so you can pick out certain design elements of that time period that you would like to incorporate.
What did you have in mind for a dress you would like? Something more form fitting?

  • I am doing a somewhat 1920s theme wedding in less than 5 months. (1910-1930s) I think martini glasses would be great for centerpieces!  If you could find some of various heights, put 3 on each table and fill them with tealights!  That would be pretty.  If you go on zazzle.com they have a ton of cute vintage and art deco wedding invites. Also check out Fenderskirts Vintage.  Ill show you a link to my bridal shower invites, Im in love with them.  And they are cheap!!!

  • I just looked everywhere for a dress like this, unique vintage has tons, designer sue wong has tons, you can get her at some high end department stores, also thanks to a knottie I found leluxclothing.com.
these are all great places to start! i love that theme!

  • My wedding is 20s themed (2 months 2 weeks) and I got my dress from Unique Vintage. My shoes I got at a local bridal shop. My center pieces are going to be antique teapots filled with flowers, and antique oil lanterns. I'm also using a lot of crystal. Sue Wong's dresses are super expensive, but they're beautiful. Maritni glasses would be cute. like the PP said, you could fill them with water and float candles in them. You could even fill the bottom of the glass with fake pearls. Feathers on the tables would also be a great 'roaring 20s' touch.

  • Ditto about the feathers! Boas were in. I found a pair of 1920s/30s reproduction shoes at DSW-- its amazing what you find. I think they were by Civic10. At one point I was thinking about having a victorian dress made (before I found my Sottero & Midgley) from a company called Lavenders Green. They do amazing work and also do 1920s. Go to their website and look at their stuff. They are about the same prices (or even less) than a lot of wedding dresses. If you send an email w/ pics to Kay, the owner, she will send you a quote and make whatever you like! It would be worth inquiring!

  • I don't know if any of this will help you, but if you want to see what actual 1920s brides (and grooms) used to wear, and what the bride's bouquets looked like, there's a page on my website with couples from that era:

Also, below are a couple of just-for-fun guy ideas from about that time:

Here's a photo of a few enthusiastic flower arrangements from approx. that time, too:

My friend Autumn had a 1920s-inspired wedding years ago.  She let me post her photos and a write up about her celebration.  (I like her cake!):

Oh!  And, lastly, there's a modern British designer who's created an amazing 1920s-inspired veil.  It's called EVELYN, and it's probably very pricey, but you can see it at:

    That's all for now!

  • This is my theme, too! Unfortunately I won't be much help though. Just getting started in my planning for a March 2011 wedding. Thanks for these great ideas!
  • David Tutera just did an episode on this last night on My Fair Wedding.  It was so cute.  He used lots of feathers, mainly white with some peacock, and pearls and candles.  The bride's dress was too vintagey but he added a super cute vintage hat and veil with pearls that really gave her an overall 20's look.  I think adding lace on your tables and taking vintage engagement pictures to place around the reception would be great too!  Good luck!

Aw dang, I missed it! I love that show. David Tutera is a riot and wicked talented. I love the passive aggressive way he'll look at some bride's sample centerpiece or bridesmak\id dresses, you can just see the muscles working in his temple as he clenches his teeth. "So, did you really want to go with a dress you got at a yard sale?""
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, WHOA. Lois, this is not my Batman glass."
  • I know this is a little late, but I am also wanting a 1920's/1930's era wedding.... I have researched a lot of what was in style during that time. Think lace, feathers, pearls, pinstripes, goldfish (yes real goldfish), jazz, art deco. The martini glasses are neat. I have ideas to either put goldfish in them or turn them into some antique looking light fixture. Tall table lamps were pretty popular at that time too. The feather vases are really neat also.

For dress ideas a beautifully beaded lace gown would work. I have a great mermaid gown that is a beaded lace and looks very timeless and classic. Im keeping jewelry simple with just a strand of pearls and single pearl earrings.

There are a ton of website with roaring 20's party ideas. It really depends on how crazy you want to get with the theme. We are going all out and plan to have a very non-traditional fun time with this. We are even thinking about replacing the traditional wedding cake with NY style cheesecake, as it became really popular during that time too. It saves a ton of money also.

My biggest trouble so far is bridesmaids dresses. Not sure if I want to do actual flapper gowns, but I can't find anything that is inspired from that era without them looking modern or vintage. I just can't find that happy in between. If anyone has any ideas please pass them along also.
