Ideas for a Top Gun Reception?

We have been tossing around ideas for the reception. And Top Gun came up any ideas on how to make this work?

Re: Ideas for a Top Gun Reception?

  • i would say depends on the element of the movie Top Gun you want to bring out.  i wouldnt over do it because may look cheesy but lil elements would be great.  maybe figher jets and wings, get dog tags.  HTH
  • Exactly like southerncutie says... small things would be nice.  Instead of table numbers, you can label them from the names in the movie "maverick, goose, iceman, etc"; dog tags as escort cards. If you are having a groom's cake, maybe the shape of a fighter jet. Your entrance song can be the Top Gun's "Danger Zone".

I would walk into the reception to the Top Gun theme song "Danger Zone" Maybe have dog tags as placecards.  I wouldn't go to crazy with it because then it may look more likea birthday party and not a wedding.

  • Honestly it's an odd choice of a theme.  Is it your favorite movie or is your FI a pilot?  Ask yourself the reason for picking this theme.

  • Themes can get very cheesy very fast. Incorportate elements, but I urge you to not go crazy or everything will look tacky.

<div>That's what I'd like to know, too.  It seems like an odd choice, and a little juvenile.  Also, a lot of people have lukewarm feelings about Tom Cruise after his comments on mental illness, etc.  I know that Top Gun predates that, but it still might not be a great pick for that reason.  </div>
  • Unless you or your FI are a fighter pilot for the US Navy, I would be rolling my eyes HARD at this.

  • Yeah, the big question is why would you have this as your theme?  Everyone in my life knows that I am head over heels in love with The Great Gatsby and the Roaring 20s, so if I had a 20's themed or Gatsby themed party, people would get that and say, "Oh, this is so her!"  The Top Gun theme seems random unless you are die hard fans and everyone knows it and might leave your guests scratching their heads.

If you DO use it, less will definitely be more in terms of it not coming off too cheesy.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I agree with PP.  Make sure this theme fits you guys, and not just because its 'fun'.  We knocked this idea around too. hubbys brother is in the air force, and we felt that US doing this theme would be a little odd and more attention to him than the wedding itself.  it didn't fit our venue or overall 'feel' to the wedding either.

That being said, you can do an entrance to the top gun theme (which by the way is called "top gun anthem" NOT 'danger zone'.... although you can use that song too.)

have the groomsmen wear/carry aviators for the day.

use call signs for table names or bar drinks

use toy planes or dog tags in your centerpieces (perhaps a small flower arrangement with a plane sticking out of it)
