We're a little less than 9 months away and I started a registry, only because the check lists I look at suggest to start now. If you're going to have a wedding related party (engagment, bridal shower), as long as it's ready for that, you should be fine.

I did the same thing. My wedding isn't till August, and I've already started my registry mainly because there's SO MUCH to add to the list and sort through on registry sites. I'm slowly doing it over time instead of crunching when I have people starting to ask.
I'd say register about 6 months in advance. That way you have time to think about your choices (I added/deleted several times) before people will actually start looking at your registry. If you register too early things can get discontinued and you will have to reselect new items. It's not really a big deal, but it can get annoying.
People will start buying gifts about two months before your wedding or a month before your shower (whatever comes first).

just keep in mind that at most department stores things like bedding and bath collections get swapped out about 3-4 times a year to make room for new fashions. this also happens with hard table top- dishware sets, etc (though not as often)
Re: How far in advance should you register?
Usually around 6 months before is a good time to register.
