"Under the dress essentials...?"

What is everyone wearing under their gown? Are you having cups sewn in? Shapewear? I have my first fitting in 2 weeks, and I need to bring it with me... but I haven't purchased anything yet! I'd like to get an idea of what other brides are doing... :o

  • My 4th pair of shoes are on the way hopefully to be delivered tomorrow (other 3 returned), so as long as they fit they are the ones and they will be there... and veil I should be picking up from FSIL soon. I've gone back and forth on the veil issue so many times... yes no, birdcage traditional... I ended up exactly with what I was sure I didn't want in the beginning, a traditional veil... so hopefully it works!

  • I am having cups sewn in and then just wearing these cute little bride panties that a friend of mine bought me as a gift. :) Since my dress is more of a ballgown type I won't need shapewear or anything.
  • I'm wearing a longline bra (from david's bridal) and some boyshorts (assets from target).

I have a pretty but functional bodysuit shapewear. I need to find a slip that doesn't make my dress poofy but doesn't show either. I didn't have shoes when I went to get my first alterations session (because I thought I'd need to wear flats). Turns out, I need a little heel, so I bought a 2.5 inch pair of heels, so I hope that helps.

I am not a good example of a bride that has it together at her first fitting, lol.

  • I'm not wearing a bra, with the corset and the boning in the dress it holds me in place without needing the extra layer. No shapewear either. my ceremony is outside and I don't want to be too hot with all the extra layers.

  • It depends on your dress. I'm the girl who can never go anywhere without a bra on, but because my dress has a lace-up back that really straps me in, I found that I don't need one. When I did have a bra on it actually gave me extra lumps I didn't want! My dress also has all the layers it needs, so I will only be needing some panties.

  • I had my first fitting last month.  I will be wearing a longline bra and crinoline slip.  My dress has no boning so I needed the extra support and padding of the bra.  They suggested I get cups sewn in, telling me it would look better.  I didn't notice a difference, but did like the added volume as I am not well endowed.  haha

I decided against Spanx because I couldn't imagine having that extra piece getting in the way if I had to use the potty.

If your not sure about whether to wear a bra or not, I would suggest leaning over in the mirror as if your talking to someone that is seated.
  • hahaha great suggestion star! I'm leaning toward getting cups sewn in bc I don't want to be pulling up a bra all night!!!

I am not wearing anything special. Sure, maybe I could use some shapewear but it is August and could be really hot and I'm just not interested. I look fine in my dress without it.

I tried on a slip to give my dress a little more poof but I honestly prefer the dress without it. I am not wearing a bra but I don't have a lot going on up there so I don't really need it. The only think I might get is some undies with a stomach panel to suck that in a little but I did not have that at my fitting so we'll see.

  • I've got a longline bra (I've got a lot of tummy jiggle so I like that it just sucks everything in and smooths everything out) and a crinoline slip (I love my poofy dress!)

  • My dress luckily came in early, so I had the pleasure of trying it on while bridesmaid dress shopping with my girls- and I found, surprisingly, that I don't need a bra in mine. It's all built in and wearing a bra under it looked weird.
So I'm thinking I'll just need some frilly panties. :)
  • I have a sheath dress when I went for the fittings the styist and seamstress both said cups werent' needed.  I didn't think they would have made a difference so I'm going without a bra.

Since the dress is form fitting I have a pair of spanx to wear underneath.

  • It will really depend on your dress. My dress is very low cut in the back and a fairly low cut v in the front. I am small chested so I am having cups sewn in my dress. I bought my slip and it is being sewn into my dress so it doesn't show in my dress. I also bought a pair of mid-wasited spanx, I wish I could have gotten the kind with the boning to nip in my waist a little more but it would show in my dress. I would ask your alterations department and consultant before your appointment if possible if you are trying to buy stuff before hand without paying bridal shop prices.

Also so I could see the whole package and get a better idea for my hair trial i also brought my veil, headpiece and jewerly with me and my mom took pictures at my fitting.

Good luck! (Also ask to walk around if you need to, I almost passed out during my fitting because I was standing with my knees locked as the alterations manager worked on my hem for almost an hour)

  • Im having cups sewn in because my dress has a very low and open back. Im also just going to find some cute underwear maybe blue (although FI is telling me not to wear any underwear at all :P).

    Ditto on all counts.
  • I am wearing spanx the ones with the boning probbaly under my dress
But my dress is a natural waist ballgown-- so I don't need much for shapewear.

I have a lot going on on top (I'm a DD)... but when I tried on teh dress with a strapless bra it made me look WAY big on top... I kind of looked like dolly parton it was ridiculous.

I took off the bra. The inside of the dress has cups in it, plus boning and a kind of "bra strap" that snaps in the back. I was surprised but I felt totally supported in the dress!
I'm adding a small removeable spaghetti strap so I don't keep hiking up my dress all night while dancing.

  • I have a strapless dress so I opted for a longline bra and am having the dress taken in a little in the waist so I'm not pulling it up all night. I'll just be wearing regular panties with my awesome blue-dipped crinoline.

  • I have a ball gown poofy dress, I'm wearing a corset bra and a crinoline slip and panties.  I haven't decided on panties, because since it is August and I'm having an outdoor wedding I know I'm just going to be a sweaty hott mess. Haha

  • Mine is a aline flare dress so just doing sewin cups. There is a corset in the dress and they had to shorten some of the boning. I said about wearing maybe spanx to the seamstress and she said honey your getting married in august its too hot for that stuff. But i lost the 5 lbs that made the front flatter in the dress so it worked out. Still deciding on the underwear.
