I *think* I Found My Dress! Ordering Question :)

Hi Ladies!

I think I found my dress today :) I found 2 that I absolutely love with just me and my bridal consultant and tomorrow after work I'm taking my MOH, Mom and Dad to look at them and hopefully pick one! :) I've included them both below and they both have corset backs.

Right now I'm a size 14 in bridal (10-12 normally) and I have been and will be working hard to lose some weight before the wedding. What size do you think I could realistically order, maybe 1 or 2 sizes smaller? My wedding is June 8 of next year, so I have about 11 months, (probably 7-8 before the dress would come in) to get where I want to be. My sister in law ordered her dress 4 sizes smaller and actually had to have it taken in almost another 2 full sizes, but she had more weight to lose and the bridal salon made her sign all of these things not holding them at fault for ordering too small of a size, hehe.

Obviously I don't want to order it a whole lot smaller and then be stressing about weight on top of all wedding things, but I do think that I will have no problem dropping a few normal sizes in the next few months.

Any input would be great!
Thanks Ladies :)

  • I love both dresses but I think I like the Allure one a bit more. But I might be biased because I like strapless gowns more overall. lol

As far as sizes go I'm not sure, does your consultant have any suggestions? Does your salon have a seamstress on site or the one that they routinely work with who could give you some insight?

    Good luck tomorrow, post pictures!

  • I would ask the salon about how much each style of dress can realistically be taken in. And most things reccomend not ordering a size smaller since its always easier to take a dress in then let it out and if you don't meet your goal and it doesn't fit you have to find a new dress. Also you know your body best and I actually measured the same sizes as you and am planning to lose weight but I know with my boobs and thick rib cage I know that no matter what I wouldn't be able to go down much in dress size even losing much weight because even at my smallest I was never smaller then an 8 so if you have been at that smaller size then more realistic that it will fit.

  • great advice, thanks ladies! :) ah, so excited for tomorrow!

anastassiiat-my consultant was super helpful, i'm sure she'd have some great advice! since i'm shorter, i kept asking her where certain things would fall with alterations and she didn't hesitate and was very precise! my FI said he's more of a fan of strapless too, hehe. i didn't even consider a dress with straps until my consultant pulled this one. funny how i thought i knew exactly what i wanted :)

Sjmiller418- thats a great point to keep in mind! bone structure wise, i'm not one of those girls who will ever be a size 0 :) With a corset back, that probably allows for higher/lower fluctuations as well :)

    thank you :)
  • Both gowns are gorgeous! Good luck to you today :) (I'm also a Milwaukee June 2013 bride!)

  • Oh I love them both!  If you go with the Maggie you can actually have more flexibility in size because it is a lace up back.  I would say just 1 size smaller, that way if you dont lose, or if you lose 2 sizes, you are still OK.

With the Allure (I think I like better because of the top) you have to be more careful.  Im afraid to tell anyone to count on losing weight.  Like someone above mentioned, Im naturally pear shaped so I lost about 20 lbs recently.  AND I still fit into my dress much like I did when I bought it last year.  Might need to be taken in just a hair but I needed to anyways originally because I have no chest.  I bought the dress in that size so it fit my hips and butt and well, still seems to fit almost the same.  Now pants, totally different story but the dress really didn't seem to show my weight loss at all.

  • Thanks so much for your advice ladies! There are a few dresses that I didnt' have the style numbers for yesterday (since it was a spure of the moment stop) so I'm going to make sure to try those on today as well (since i've been looking at those for months online) and hopefully pick one! I think at most I might go 1 size down from what I currently measure at if the bridal salon thinks that would be an ok idea, but I suppose, anything else and I'm probably playing with fire!

rooney2012-ah so exciting a fellow June MKE bride :) are you doing an indoor or outdoor wedding? i love outdoor weddings/ceremonies but was way too nervous (18 months in advance) of what WI weather would bring to do an outdoor anything!

Both dresses are great -- I personally prefer the Maggie Sottero one though because I feel it's more classic.  The Allure one is more fashion forward and although it's in style now, I'd worry that when I looked back on my pictures in 30 years I'd laugh at my choice.

Speaking from experience, don't ever EVER buy a dress in a size smaller. I did that for a bridesmaid dress and it was a huge disaster.  You can never count on your body losing weight and even if you do lose weight, you can never count on losing it in the RIGHT places!   Please trust me on it.  Order the size you are now and then have it taken in.  It'll be far less stressful than ending up with a dress that doesn't do up in the back!   I am sure that any bridal consultant would tell you the same thing.

I agree with PP- order in your size!!  You can always, always have it taken in- even if you drop 4-6 sizes and it needs major reconstruction... but for me, I cannot imagine a worse feeling about my dress than putting it on and having it be too small.   BUT, you do know yourself and your body the best so definitely see what the consultant recommends when you bring it up with her :-)

Side: I actually ordered up one size intentionally- I have a ballgown and my boobs will (luckily) be the first things to grow or shrink if I fluctuate.  I ordered the gown at a time when I was in grad school teaching fitness classes four times a week knowing that I would soon be switching to full time work and wouldn't be able to exercise as much until I got into a good rhythm. Lo and behold, I put on 5-8 pounds which is a LOT on a five foot tall gal, so my gown fit perfectly when it came in!  I likely will need to take it in when I have my fittings next year since I am going to return to my "comfortable weight", but I didn't want my weight to be an added stress!

Also, both dresses are SO beautiful and so different!! I love the buttons on the Allure, and the way the Maggie Sottero falls is just lovely.

I would have to agree on ordering the size you are now. Because you really don't know if you will end up losing the weight and to be honest I certainly wouldn't want to be stressed over the dress fitting. It's so much easier to take in the dress rather than letting it out.
Both dresses are beautiful, you couldn't go wrong either way with those choices.

  • I bought the Allure dress!!! :):) I put it on as my first dress today with my mom, dad, MOH, and sister and they really liked it, but of course, they wanted to see more! They didn't really like the Maggie dress :-/ So I tried on a few more, some were their picks and some were mine, but nada. So I asked my consultant to put me back in the Allure dress, add a veil and a belt and I made my entourage close their eyes... ah, the looks on their faces were priceless. they LOVED it. They didn't even realize that it was the same dress I had on first... :)

I measured borderline between a 14 and a 16 when the lady took my measurements and after chatting with my consultant and the seamstress, I ordered the 14 (which was the sample size I had tried on and the zipper still had about an inch to go up below the corset back. My seamstress said without any hesitation that a dress like this would not be a problem to go up or down 2 sizes as far as alterations go. So my goal is to have the dress be altered to a 10 :)  But thanks to everyone's stories and advice, if something should happen or nothing at all, I'm safe up to a 18 as well!

This is why having these boards is SO Beneficial! Thank you ladies! I will post a pic soon, but be warned, my iPhone quality pic does not do the bling justice :)

INDOOR! Hahaha. I was also too nervous to attempt outdoor. It's been crazy here lately, no? 100+ degrees! Congrats on purchasing your dress! You sound so happy about it! I bought mine a couple weeks ago and it has a similar shape and skirt :) I think the choice you made is a good one... when can you ever wear a dress like that again? It definitely has the bridal feel. Congrats again!

  • I absolutely love the first one, makes me think of a princess :)

My 2cents- don't go down more than 1 dress size when ordering, yes it can be taken in and altered but what if you don't lose as much as you were expecting? Then you don't have a dress that fits and it's harder to make it bigger than smaller.  Believe me I was hoping to be down at least 2 sizes this summer from last and I actually went up a size.  Bummer

  • Thanks ladies! Here it is and I ordered it in my current size :) After all of this helpful input, why risk it? Either way its going to be altered, I'll just be shooting to have it taken in ;)  I also ordered the jeweled belt/sash thingy as well! :)
