Unitarian?

Hi,
I'm new to posting/lurking on the this board :) Is there anyone who is a part of the unittarian church...I am thinking of joining...I was raised catholic and have always considered myself catholic but because my FI was previously married...I was unable to get married in a catholoic church.  Because of this, i can no longer get communion and as a lot have stated over on the catholic boards am no longer in a state of grace/catholic.  So...we actually got married in a Unitarian Church with a wonderful minister so I was curious if anyone can tell me more.  Sorry this was so long.

    Welcome!

I am not Unitarian, but I have some base knowledge about the religion. What has you leaning toward it?

  • Unitarianism and Christianity are VERY different. Unitarians don't view Christ as God. They seem him as a prophet or a messanger from God. Unitarians have dismissed a lot of the key beliefs of Christianity. They claim to be a branch of Christianity, but it's relly an entirely different religion.

I'm glad you liked the pastor, but I would look into it quite a bit more before switching religions. Perhaps try an evangelical church? Their doctorine would allow you and your husband to join regardless of any previous marriages. I'm part of a baptist church and I know many people who have been married before.

Probably the most seamless transition would be to the Lutheran church, their viewpoints most resemble Catholocism.

Hopefully that answers a little bit! Let me know if you want more info, or maybe that was too much :)

Not at all :) It was very helpful and interesting...I did not know they were that different from Christianity...I will look to see if we have a lutheran church nearby and learn more about it.  Thanks.

  • Agree with PP. Also would like to add that the Orthodox church is also very similar, from my limited understandin. Check this out, too:

    Compares major Christian religions.
  • Read Mere Christianity by CS Lewis and figure out what you yourself believe before trying to fit into a box/denomination maybe ? That's my suggestion... But there are Churches that resemble more of a Catholic litergical [sit down, stand up, order of service] type process in additon to the basic values etc.

  • If you are looking for something similar to Catholism try Orthodoxy or Anglican or Episcopalian.  While they all have their differences they all have liturgical styled services.  If you want to know more about Orthodoxy I am Russian Orthodoxy and would be happy to assist you. :)

Also thank you Rebecca for saying what I was thinking.

  • I think you would need to clarify if you are talking about the Unity Church (www. unity.org) or the Unitarian Universalists (www. uua.org).  These two are very different.

The Unity Church is what I believe the first poster was talking about, sounds like it to me, but I could be wrong (if so, sorry!).  They have a Christian basis, but do have different interpretations than most Christian denominations on Christ, the Bible, the afterlife, etc.

Unitarian Universalist congregations, sometimes called Unitarians or UUs, are more of an inclusive religious/spiritual community with no particular dogma.  The members of a given congregation may be Christian, Buddhist, atheist, agnostic, humanist, Jewish, pagan etc etc.

In my understanding, both groups are fairly inclusive, but the Unity Church has more specific beliefs than the Unitarian Universalists. So I would read through their websites and find out what beliefs, etc. they have.  And the other ladies had great suggestions of finding the right place for you.
  • I agree with what a lot of the PPs say. I have had experience with Unitarians who were staunch atheists and who were very unkind to Christians.

My recommendation would be to do some good old-fashioned research into different denominations or individual churches. You and your husband may need to look into what you both want and try to find something that fits your beliefs.

</div><div>Yep! That's what I meant. I think that's what I thought OP (Original Poster) was refering to. </div><div>
</div><div>I don't see how they are Christian at all. They don't make claims to believe anywhere in Jesus as God. Their website claims that they believe him to be a "good teacher" which would make me nervous about quickly jumping to it since it is such a dramatic shift. </div><div>

  • I'm an Episcopalian (Anglican) and a lot of families that come to our church and join are in situations where a Catholic married a Protestant and this is where they meet.  Anglicanism basically has the ancient worship style, but Protestant theology.

But from my experience, each Episcopal church and diocese is very different.  I love my local church, and I trust my diocese overall, but at one point I was thinking about moving to Michigan and looked at their diocesian website and was very uncomfortable with what they seemed to believe. I've also visited other local churches in my diocese that I wasn't quite comfortable with (though not like the Michigan one). So if you check out Episcopal/Anglican churches, you should look at all your local churches, because you might like one and not the other.

I go to an interdenominational Bible Study and we recently had a guy come in who is currently going to a Unitarian Church and is looking for a new church. He is a Christian and has Christian beliefs, and had gone to the Unitarian Church at an invite from a friend... and now is very uncomfortable because of the extent of inclusiveness and weird practices. For Sunday School, he told us they literally are offering "Pagan 101", so long as you pay the $50 registration fee.

    Yeah....

Oops...yes I was talking about Unitarian Universalist not the Unity Church...sorry for the confusion...I am kind of happy that some of the posters were tlaking about the Unity Church because I was kind of confused.  And it may explain why my mom was so worried when I said I was getting married there...LOL! She definitely enjoyed the ceremony.
Thank you for all of the advice.  I will definitely take a look at all the suggested religions/faiths.
