Umbrellas if it rains?

We are having an outdoor ceremony (at a small gazebo) with an indoor reception at a different location. The ceremony location doesn't have an indoor backup area in case of rain. That time of year isn't too rainy, but I don't want to not plan for anything. I would like to still have the ceremony at our current location as long as it's not pouring or a thunderstorm. I'll get umbrellas for the bridal party, but do I need to get umbrellas for all of the guests (~80)? And for the bridal party, should I get 1 umbrella per "couple" (bm & gm) or 1 for each person?
We are on a tight budget of $5000 (hoping to include honeymoon in there too).

I need opinions

Our wedding isn't until June 25, 2011.

Re: Umbrellas if it rains?

  • With such a small budget, I wouldn't buy them honestly. I considered buying umbrellas, but I didn't want to spend the money that I could put towards something else and plus I wanted to consider the guests. Umbrellas may block and hinder some peoples view of the ceremony, and they may just be stuck looking into an umbrella the whole time.
  • I have the same budget as you and am planning my wedding during a time of year that is 50/50 for rain. I'm planning to inform all guests on my wedding website that an umbrella would be a good thing to bring with them in case it rains lightly (in heavy rain I have a backup location).

For the bridal party and us, I plan to pick up white umbrella's for each person the day before if the forecast says there is a high chance of rain. I will source them out in advance though so I don't have to drive around like crazy. I figure if I can save the money and not buy them, great!
  • It predicted crazy downpours for our wedding so we bought 25 golf umbrellas just in case (to get the guests to and from the tent). It ended up not raining and we just returned them all.  If you get some, get one per bridesmaid/groomsman, but you don't need to get them for all the guests.
We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

  • Thanks for the opinions! I'll put on our website to bring umbrellas if the weather looks bad and hopefully people can see around them. Seating shouldn't be too crowded where we're having it so we can space the chairs out so more can see. Although I found ponchos on the dollar tree site. Our guests would look so cool! haha

I'll try not to worry too much about the weather until a week before, then I can see if the bridal party umbrellas are needed.

Thanks again and good luck with your weddings!
