The multicultural engagement party?

My fiance's father is Vietnamese. It is tradition to have a large, lavish engagement party to celebrate the couple. My fiance's parents want to have more of an "American" party since a Vietnamese one would cost too much. The problem is, I don't know what they mean by that -- especially since I've never actually been to an engagment party. So, what does an American engagement party look like? What do people usually do at them other than drink and eat food?

I'm not going to lie, I don't really want an engagement party. My fiance and I have been dating for almost seven years, so it's not a surprise we're engaged. I just feel like I need to have this party since it's such a big part of the Vietnamese culture -- I just don't know what is involved in planning/pulling off an engagement party. Help?

we had ours at a clubhouse at a family friends community. we decorated it nicely with black, red and white decor. served appetizers and cocktails. the attire was dressy casual and just had an ipod dock to play music. everyone mingled and danced. i loved it. good luck.
