Does mother of bride dress have to match wedding party?

Does the mother of the bride dress have to coordinate with the wedding party?

My wedding colors are coral and navy. My mom found a beutiful dark plum dress and loves it. She looks great, and I was telling one of my freinds about the dress. She said that moms should match the bridal party....any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

  • Um, no. Your mom can wear whatever she wants.

  • I don't know where that idea came from. The mothers may wear any color, except white or ivory.

  • Your Mom can wear whatever she wants because she is not part of the bridal party, just a VIP guest.

  • Let your mom wear whatever dress she likes and feels comfortable in.

Generally, moms don't even want to match the bridal party. I know my mom didn't. Before she found her dress, she was constantly worrying about being too closely matched with the bridesmaids. She was worried about taking away from the wedding party, lol

    Your friend is 100% incorrect.

The momma's can wear whatever they want, except white or ivory.

Since a plum color will not clash with navy or coral I think it would actually be a very beautiful compliment to your wedding party. Especially if she loves it and she look great in it! I wouldn't want my mother to match my party, anyway!
  • I (a momma) steered away from the same shade as the bridesmaids even though I love that color and wear it well. I did consider a much darker, different shade of green but DD thought perhaps it was still too close so I opted for a gorgeous chocolate brown that will look even better!

So, the answer is NO, they don't have to match and some brides prefer the DO NOT.

Hey daganielle ... another South Dakotan!!! YAY! Not very many on here!

  • My soon to be mother in law is wearing the same color dress as my bridesmaids (plum) and the style of her dress is similiar to my gown (except she has straps and I do not).  She doesnt care that this upsets me and said no ones wedding is perfect.  How am i supposed to be ok with this?
  • Karkeys, I think it will turn out fine. No one will think her dress competes with yours. On a positive,at least her selection isn't a clashing color.
  • I think the general rule is that mothers of the bride can wear whatever they want, as long as it's not white or ivory to outshine their daughters getting married.
