Should I register for gifts?

My fiance and I were planning on getting married in August of 2012, but, due to family matters, have moved the date up to August 12, 2011. I feel like having a bridal shower would be expecting too much, specifically because of our time-crunch. However, I am wondering if it's okay to register for gifts (and put the registry information on our wedding website), even though we've been living together for nearly year (all of furniture, housewares, etc. are hand-me-downs or clearance buys and I would love to have a matching set of nice dishes, haha). What should I do?

Re: Should I register for gifts?

  • You can certainly register and putting that info on the website is generally accepted.  Just make sure you don't put it on your wedding invites, but do let your parents know where you're registered so that when people ask they'll have an answer.
  • I don't think there is anything wrong with registering. In fact, I think you should if you think people will be purchasing gifts. This way you know you will get what you want and not a lot of random things. If someone wants to throw you a shower, they will. If not, guests can choose to shop off of it for the wedding.
  • IMO I don't feel that registering now would be in poor taste. Many stores prefer you to register about 7-5 months prior to the wedding due to items being placed on clearance etc.

We did not register until December and our wedding was in March (25th). However, I only mentioned our registry to our immediate family, bridesmaids and my MOH that planned the shower (and yes on the wedding website but only bc of the many requests from people for a link). If someone asked me outright and insisted I tell them then I would just let them know. No big deal.

Just don't have immediate family throw your shower (a willing BM will probably step up in most cases or at least close friend. Just don't ASK them. They will most likely ask you who is throwing it and if you say no one has mentioned it yet they may step up.) AND do NOT put registry info on ANYTHING you send out yourself including the STDs or the wedding invites.

We lived together for about 3 years before we got married and registered for things that would be an upgrade from college grade stuff (like his old towels EEW!). We registered for things in a broad range ($35-upwards of $200) that included a food processor, fine china, flatware that matches etc that we would consider a splurge that most people with a more established lifestyle would consider essential. So really, there will be things that you do no already have that you can register for.
  • Thanks, everyone! I'm definitely going to register now. :)

  • You can register for gifts and make it private until it gets closer to your wedding.

  • Absolutely.

Have you gone to a wedding or shower recently where they didn't have a registry?! It's THE biggest pain in the ass. You can always upgrade and improve on the things you have :)
  • I wasn't going to register either for the same reason.  FI and I have been together 4 years and have lived together 2 of those years. So I didn't feel like we really "needed" anything. However, family was insistent that people were going to want to buy us gifts and putting up a registry was the easiest thing. So we put one up.  It's amazing how much stuff we actually found to put on there!  So I say go for it!  You can probably always use an upgrade on new sheets, plates, towels, etc. :-)
