update on wedding dress fabric and question about alterations on a corset back dress

So it turns out that my yard of fabric to make my one-shoulder strap with has been stuck in customs for over a week....AWESOME. it isn't going to be here for another two weeks. So I am going to have my first fitting this Saturday to take care of the other stuff, then once the fabric comes in, will have my second fitting when the seamstress takes care of the strap.
UGH so frustrating, but hopefully it will get out of customs soon....it has to go from customs, to the designer, to my bridal boutique, which could potentially take even longer than two weeks.

My question is this - I tried my dress on, but haven't met with the seamstress yet.  My bridal consultant insisted that my dress fit me perfectly throughout the bust/bodice, but I swear, it was slipping all over the place despite her lacing up the corset really tightly. I almost had a few "nip slips" just walking around the boutique, that's how loose it was in the bust.  It really did fit my waist and hips perfectly, I am just worried about my small chest situation.

Did any of you with corset back dresses have to get your dress taken in around the bust? My consultant was under the impression that since it had a corset, I wouldn't need anything taken in, but I am not so sure if I believe her.

(sorry about being a PW today - I am procrastinating at work and these are the things my busy mind is worrying about today).

Re: update on wedding dress fabric and question about alterations on a corset back dress

  • I just went for my dress fitting Friday night.  The seamstress had me wear the dress around her studio for awhile to see if it would slip down.  Then when it slipped a litte (you could see the top of my strapless bra), she tightened it.  I wore it around again.  It slipped again.  She tightened it again.  She said let's see what happens this time.  I wore it and it slipped again.  She couldn't possibly tighten it anymore, so she told me she had to take it in.  She actually said it has nothing to do with the bust (and I am pretty big in the chest), but from the waist.  If it is big at all in the waist or hips, the whole dress will start slipping down.  When she put the pins in and showed how tight she'd make it in the waist, the dress stopped slipping down.

    HTH!

  • beabull that is EXACTLY what mine was doing (except mine has cups in it, so I won't be wearing a strapless bra), even after the corset got tightened.

Interesting that it's actually the waist that is too big when the bust slips!! Hopefully that is something that my seamstress will be able to fix. Thanks for the feedback!
  • omg now you totally have me freaking out inside my head wondering if I didn't walk around enough in my dress when I went to my fitting. It seemed like it was perfect while I was standing, but I barely moved around in it. Now I kinda wish I didn't have a strapless dress - they look great but they are so stressful!

  • Not to make you nervous Bmore, but mine felt fine when I first put it on.  It looked good to, so I thought I was good to good!  I didn't quite get why she was having me keep it on for so long, but then she explained that corset back dresses settle a bit, and should be re-tightened about 15 minutes after you first put it on (we didn't quite wait that long in between each time, but she did want me to walk around and mover around in it a bit to see what happened).  I was surprised to see how much it keep pulling down.

  • Also, she said that if you have anything silky or slippery under the dress like certain undergraments, spanx, etc. the dress slips more easily, so it should be tied a bit tighter, or make sure to re-righten it.

  • YIKES! I think I definitely need mine taken in.  Mine looked and felt good too, but I kept it on for probably 15-20 minutes to try on veils, take pictures, etc., and the longer I had it on, the more it slipped.  Beabull you are an expert at this!!!
  • Well mine is not a corset back, so maybe there is less to worry about? That's what I'm hoping!

  • Yep!! I had to have my bust taken in A LOT!  Just because I'm big doesn't mean I have huge boobs! lol...I'm an 18/20 sometimes 14/16 top and my bra size varies from a 40C/D to a 42C....I'm just glad I got the size smaller than what they suggest because I would have been swimming in it even more!!

Just make sure when they tie you up that you hold your dress where you want it on your boobs and squish tight until she's done tying you up...that helped a lot and it fits sooo much better now that it was taken in.

Also, I agree about the waist!! It was tied up too loose at first & when she tighted it, it was much better, but then if I bent over my girls would be falling out & there would be too much gappage!

SIDE NOTE: have you thought about purchasing a belt instead of fabric for a strap?

  • Wow... I had no idea! THANKS for this post! I also have a strapless with a corset in the back and it was just 100% perfect when I first tried it on. I'll have to walk around in the dress for a while at my first fitting in a couple of weeks.
