Anyone doing Europe for honeymoon?

My fiance and I planning on backpacking Europe for our honeymoon (we're not "sit on the beach at a resort" type of people) and was wondering if anyone had done the same and had any tips or recommendations?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone doing Europe for honeymoon?

  • I haven't but my dad did something like that. He got a really small trailer and drove across Europe with some sort of a caravan club with a guide. Not exactly camping out but simliar but he went for three months and had a blast. They did a lot of sight seeing and hiking. The guide was key because they where going to so many different countries/cultures and they had to pack light and do the wear one outfit/wash one type thing. They even rigged up a clothes washer that worked in the car whilest driving. It was a plain bucket with a bit of soap then when you made a pit stop filled it with rinse water then drove then hung the stuff up near a window to dry. I got a kick out of that since the motion from the car swished the clothes.

  • I went backpacking with my siblings a few years ago.  We went to Dublin (great way to spend a day or two on our way to get used to the time change without having the language barrier), Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Barcelona, and Madrid.  I can't necessarily speak about romance since I was with family and we stayed in hostels... but it was an amazing experience and I loved all those cities!!

  • I lived in Europe for a while and saw so many amazing places. I would definitely suggest looking into hostels. I stayed in two different hostels in Lisbon, Portugal that were AMAZING. You can book rooms with one full sized bed in it, so you don't have to share with any random people.

I would also suggest Florence, Prague, Amsterdam, and Munich. They were all so beautiful. And if you decide to go to Lisbon, you definitely should go to Porto. It is so romantic and quaint!!!

This is where I stayed in Lisbon:
  • I'm going to England, Croatia, and Slovenia for my honeymoon. My fiance and I have done London, Paris, and Madrid together. London and Paris I think would both be fantastic honeymoon spots. Both have tons of 'tourist attractions', amazing restaurants, and tons of fabulous hotels. I don't think you would get bored in either place and you'd still have plenty of romance. One tip I would say is that generally smaller hotels are cheaper than chains... I usually scour Trip Advisor for recommendations. Also, I love Rick Steves guidebook and the Travelers Helpline on his website.

  • We're going to England.  My fiance wants to go to a Liverpool game (which isn't very honeymoony but since I'm being a bit of a bridezilla, I want him to pick the honeymoon)  Since we are going to be in England, we are going to spend a few days on Guernsey, which is an island off the coast of England where one of my favorite books takes place.  I am really looking foward to the honeymoon!

  • We're thinking of spending a few days in London then heading to Guernsey and jersey for the rest of the 2weeks.
