NWR: How did you find your current job?

So I'm still looking for a job and I really don't know how to even start my search to be honest.

I was curious how you found your current job and how you started your career.

I started in the mailroom of a law firm and worked my way up. No school or anything. All I ever had was Typing 101 in high school. I have done everything you can do at a law firm besides be a lawyer! Now I work for 2 partners and have my own office. I have worked for my main boss for the last 11 years.

I have a degree in Financial Planning. A guy that I went to school with used to work at the firm I work at now. I saw on the FPA (financial planning association) website that they were hiring, so I called my friend and asked him about it. He told his bosses I was interested and that he would recommend that they at least interview me. They interviewed me and soon hired me.

I'm a big believer in networking - at least in my field. What field would you like to work in?

I've worked for my company for 5 years now. When looking, I targeted 3-4 companies that I thought were growing, had good opportunities, and I wanted to work for.

I applied to any and all positions at those companies that I thought would remotely fit my skills. I ended up working as a technician in the field for a year, and then got a big break with a few promotions and am now managing about 20 people throughout the country.

Target a few companies, apply for any and everything, take the job, do good, and work your way up.

What field are you looking into?

I stumbled into the field that I'm in through a recommendation from a friend... but the current position that I'm in was because of networking... I'm a firm believer in it too!

I received a referral from a former colleague, but before I entered my current industry I was on Monster, CareerBuilder, Yahoo Hot Jobs, the Alumni Association from my alma mater, CraigsList, LinkedIn...basically everything. You may also want to try to contact the trade organizations for the industry that you are interested in working.
If you don't mind me asking, what type of work are you looking for? What area of DFW? If it is something that I have a contact for I can see about getting you an interview.

Current Job:   A former coworker at my last company told me about a great position at the company he had gone to. He spread the word about me and got me an interview.

Started Career: Networked through the university and got an entry level position for a great company.   It was a stepping stone to where I am now... although I'd like to leave where I am now. LOL.

Definitely network and use your school's career center. Go to the university job fairs (you can still go as an alumni) .. In my experience, those things really open up doors.

ETA:   Picking out a few companies you want to work for is a great approach as PP's said.

I think I'm like most others here, it was networking. When I graduated from college my brother worked in recruiting and set me up with an interview. My current job came from a lead from someone I worked with at my first job.

I also have a degree in finance. I work in Commercial Banking as a Commerical Underwriter. My advice is to apply for every finance job you see even if it requires experience you don't have. Check Monster, Yahoo jobs, and Indeed.com for job openings. Also check out banks and finance companies direct websites to see what job openings they have. I know several people who work at Nation Star Mortgage in Lewisville, they are known for hiring people straight out of college, you should check out their job openings.

I tell people I lucked into the event planning field, my company before the one I'm currently with just had a posting on Monster.

I found my current company's posting for an event coordinator on indeed.com (great tool to use, actually as it's a search engine for all the job sites.) Since joining this company 3 years ago, I've worked my way up to Sales Manager.

I was with the company for 4 years before I quit the first time to finish college. I got ahold of a manager (then) and she gave me the two district mgrs info that are in the DFW area so I contacted them. But I'm def. looking for something WAY better that appriciates me....but no luck

network! ask anyone and everyone you know if they know someone who's hiring. i'm a voc. rehab counselor (read= teach people how to find a job) and this is how you have to do it! we even show people a pyramid of how to find a job... people almost never get a job from a posting or newspaper ad or cold calling.

I do believe in networking however I moved here from Nebraska so I had no connections in the city. I applied at a lot of places that had openings that I not only had skills in but sounded interesting. I used monster, careerbuilder, and indeed.com. I found my current job through indeed.com.

FI just got a job and he found his the same way on the internet by using careerbuilder.com
