I was researching CA marriage liceses and found this...
Can I get married to my cousin?

Yes, cousin marriages (first, second, etc) are allowed to take place.

Are same sex marriages legal?

No, same-sex marriages are not allowed or legally recognized in California, nor are they recognized on the federal level.
I wanted to put my head through a wall.

  • At least some of those states impose restrictions pertaining to reproduction (http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/human-services/state-laws-regarding-marriages-between-first-cousi.aspx).  I guess we know where Californians get their crazy.
In Response to Re:I was researching CA marriage liceses and found this...: Oh, it pretty much all icks me out, personally, but I don't think the right to marriage should be tied to procreation and the reason for banning incestuous marriages is because of high risk or birth defects from inbreeding. However, not having a legal marriage license won't keep a brother and sister from procreating if they really want to, not all marriages result in kids, and we don't prevent nonrelated couples from marrying if their combined genes put their kid at a greater risk for disabilities. <strong>So, that basically tells me that, much like gay marriage, incestuous marriages are REALLY banned because people think it's "wrong" or "gross". And I just don't believe others should be legally punished for having different morals than myself, unless it brings inherent harm to others. I'm also for legalizing polygamy, even though I'd never consider it myself, so yeah...</strong>

</div><div>All of this, especially the bolded.  As long as all marriages are between consenting adults who have not been coerced or misled in any way, I don't think it's really anyone's business who marries who.  </div><div>
</div><div>Of course, I reserve the right to be a little squeemish about certain things, but just because I wouldn't be comfortable with it, doesn't mean it should be illegal.  There's a lot of legal marriages that take place that I wouldn't approve of or gross me out (Anna Nicole, anyone?), but I still don't feel I have the right to tell them just because I wouldn't do it that they can't either.

You and I think alike, my friend.

I know a lot of my opposition to incestuous marriages is my own "ick" factor, and I couldn't possibly in good conscience vote to ban someone elses happiness because of my own hangups. People should be able to marry whoever and however many people they want.
