burning calories at work?

So I just took a new summer job of Housekeeping at a hotel. I'm wondering if I can really claim that as exercise for the day. It seems too easy, but at the same time I'm on my feet for 8 hours a day bending over, scrubbing, lifting heavy sheets, etc. I even found my self doing jump squats on my tip toes while dusting just to see I could lose an extra calorie or two. So what do you all think? I mean I still exercise my usual routines on days off, but when I get home from work I'm so exhausted that going for a run is not possible.

Re: burning calories at work?

  • ive worked in hotels for years and i spent one summer in charge of the housekeeping dept while the head housekeeper was on maternity leave. I lost about 14 pounds! Esp if you are in a bigger building you dont really realize how much you are walking! I suggest using an ipod or something similar to keep you going and moving!!
  • Every little bit of effort counts! But at the same time, whatever bit of calorie-burning you manage to fit in at work just won't cut it if you want to see serious changes in your body. Your nutrition has to be right on point and you have to be willing to put in work in the gym...

  • If you're going from a mostly sedentary lifestyle of sitting behind a desk to a more active lifestyle it does have the potential to help you drop pounds much quicker (so long as you're not overeating to compensate for the new activity).

I agree you should still attempt to workout outside of work, but I think you'll find on average in a day you will be burning significantly more calories.
