We opted for a DJ after figuring out the price for a band.  We did live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour though.

Aside from the price, we also liked the flexibility of a DJ, and his ability to play anything and everything that we asked him to, unlike a band that will not be able to play the song that just dropped last week, and likely is limited in style.

    Good luck!

Edit: I should also mention that FI and I have just about the most opposite tastes in music (except for the some good classics).

i am definitely going to do the band route. mr.owl and i have never really enjoyed dj's at weddings and are going to start researching big band/swing band options in a few weeks. i suggest starting with gigmasters.com and then contacting the bands directly. ignore their initial pricing on there. most are willing to work with your budget. just email them.

I would have loved to hire a live band. I think they bring a lot to the atmosphere. I just couldn't squeeze it in my budget.

What type of band are you looking for? My dad is a pianist so he knows a lof of musicians in town and I could ask him for reccomendations

I would also love to consider a band but I just can't work it into my budget. I have been at some really fun weddings who had great bands (they were in Cleveland though so sorry I can't give actual recommendations). If you get a really good band they can usually play a pretty wide variety of music but of course the more popular the band, the higher the price.

I think I am going to opt for strings during my ceremony and cocktail hour and go the DJ route. I was just going to do a playlist and rent equipment but I think that is making my mom too nervous!

MissOwl... Michael at Via Vecchia said that he could get a band for super cheap, he told me cheaper than a DJ would be and they were good and local, so you could also check that out.

We hired a live band for our wedding and got a ton of compliments. There were even a few people who said they were bummed cause we didn't have a DJ (and DJ's tend to play more variety of music) but that they ended up liking the band better because of the general atmosphere it created. We had people up and dancing until midnight when we had to kick them out so we could clean up and go home!   We used Mrs. Robinson & The Graduates (we know the singer so we lucked out on not really having to pay anything), but I know there are a bunch of bands around Columbus that do the wedding circuit.

We are using an 18-piece big band for our reception. They are VERY reasonably priced and very nice to work with!

We are having a Frank Sinatra impersonator during dinner and a DJ for the reception.  I wish we could afford a band, but it really was not in the budget :-(

If you are looking for a band, MojoFlo is really great!  I have seen them twice now, and they rocked it both times.
