This MAY sound strange but....

I posted this in my wedding month boards August 2012 and also wanted to on this board..Last week, I tried my wedding dress on the for the first time and need only about 3-4 inches off..well, when my Mom mentioned 'depending on which shoes you pick out'...it hit me! I want to go barefoot!! My mom is all for it! We sat and discussed how many times have you been to a wedding and either never saw the shoes or just a glimpse because pretty much everyone is looking at your dress..I had a friend get married last year in her grandmas back yard and she went barefoot! So being that it is August and we would be kicking our shoes off once we got into the reception (as most I have seen do), I really do think I just want to go barefoot! I always have my toenails done with a french manicure so why not? Like I said in the topic...this MAY sound strange...LOL!

  • I'd bring a pair of sandals for walking over pavement or going to the bathroom.

  • Your feet will get very very dirty doing this. If you're ok with that, then go for it. I would have a pair of flip flops ready for when you'll be walking on pavement and getting pictures done.

  • I don't mind being barefoot in my home, but I definitely would not be barefoot in a public place.  It reminds me of Britney Spears going into gas station bathroooms barefoot.  It's just gross.  Plus I'd be afraid I'd step on something sharp and cut myself which would suck.  I bought pretty, comfy heels for my ceremony and details shots, but I have comfy wedge flip-flops for the reception.
  • Maybe because I grew up in the country, but I don't see anything wrong with this.  As a kid I ran barefoot all the time, and love the idea of their being barefoot feet under the wedding dress.  Just remember at the end of the night to wash your feet before bed.

  • I was barefoot for a lot of our reception, but it was on the beach.

I would recommend flip flops, but really, I see no problem going barefoot in the backyard if that is what you want.
  • I was barefoot most of my wedding day. Not during the ceremony but definitely the reception (but my dress was knee length so definitely noticeable).

What is your venue? If it's outside then barefoot could be tricky, and painful if there are rocks or broken glass anywhere.

Eh, I think this is... tacky? Klassy? Unless you are wearing a really casual sundress. A formal dress deserves shoes that match it in formality. You can wear flats or really low heels, but I'm not down with being barefoot OR in flip flops. It's your wedding, though, and your shoes.

  • I went stocking-foot during most of the dancing portion my reception (my dress was really long; not super noticable. Definitely not caught in any pictures that I've seen).

That being said, I'd advise against doing that too much. Someone broke a glass in the main walkway of the reception hall and I almost found out too late. The last thing a wedding needs is the bride being carried away bleeding all over the floor and the hem of her gown.

Flip flops are a good idea. You still get that barefoot feel. Another alternative is ballet flats.

  • I'm curious where YOUR wedding is taking place.  You said your friend had a backyard wedding, but are you also?  I think going barefoot or in flip flops is fine if it fits the formality of your dress/wedding/venue.  A beach wedding? heck yeah, go barefoot.  In a church? no.

You might want to double check if you're even allowed to go barefoot at your ceremony and reception locations (you know that whole "no shirt, no shoes, no service" rule?)

I agree with this. My shoes were so uncomfortable so after the ceremony I changed into ballet slippers. They were wonderful! So I would have a Plan B like flip flops or some kind of slippers.

<div>Agreed. Bare feet and/or flip flops with a wedding dress is just NMS.</div>
  • Thanks for all your inputs ladies! I am having a gazebo wedding and the reception hall is only yards away..The aisle I will have to walk down is only maybe 10 feet then up 3 stairs to the gazebo but yes, I think I will take a pair of flip flops just in case.  Hadn't thought of the bathroom ordeal, yuck!

  • Defintely not my style, but if you go through with it, I would just be careful. Even if you feel it's a place where it's safe to be barefoot, there might still be sharp things or rough objects that you step on unexpectedly and the last thing you'd want in a white dress is a bloody foot I'm guessing.

My thoughts exactly.  Even if you are getting married in a backyard, definitely wear some shoes.  You could step on a bee or a biting ant or something else crawling around in the grass and that could really eff things up for your entire day.

  • I go barefoot when I'm not at work, but I'll wear shoes to get married.

If you go barefoot enough that your feet are tough and you can walk, without pain, on the surfaces you'll be walking on... go for it. I can walk on my gravel driveway to get the mail, or asphalt (except when it's brutal hot, then it cooks my feet!), and I even go in bathrooms barefoot at Wally world and gas stations.

  • even at a beach wedding, id have something (flip flops) on my feet.  also, there are board of health codes that prohibit not wearing shoes (granted, ive never seen this enforced on a dancefloor).

You can get 'barefoot' sandals that have beads that look like flip flops with no soles, I've worn them around for years and never been asked to leave anywhere. I think they would be pretty with a wedding dress on the beach and dress a barefoot up some.

Hopefully you stay up to date on your tetanus shot.

    Edit:
I had a friend in college that never wore shoes. Ever. Not to class. Not outside. Not in the winter. He did wear a pair of flip-plops in the cafeteria because they made him. He kept them in a locker.

Also, despite having a dorm room, instead he slept in a tent in the woods. After it rained he'd borrow my hairdryer to dry out his tent.

This thread is bringing "fond" memories to the surface.
  • I was barefoot for my wedding.  I hate wearing shoes on the beach.  I wore flip flops for the reception.

Now I did have heels to wear, but with the hurricane the floor was a little wet.   Considering for 13 years I was barefoot at work and the other times I was in flip-flops I thought it would be safer for me to stick with the flops.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Im barefoot when Im not working, hate shoes but can not imagine not wearing shoes in the winter..brrr!! LOL!  I have a pair of white flip flops, I think my BM has them, my Mom wore them 1/2 her life and now can't stand anything between her toes, she will probably just wear knee high hose under her dress and throw them away afterwards

  • You might want to consider white Isotoner slippers.
  • If you go barefoot at your wedding, you'll miss the entire "painful feet from the wedding shoes" ritual all brides go through! Seriously though, it is your wedding and it should be about you and your future husband's life together, not about the shoes you wear.

On that note, I'd keep something on hand (flip flops, etc.) just in case you need them.
