Re: Maternity leave

  • *runs off and starts packing* So long, ladies!!!

WOW! And here we get 6 weeks of paid leave, but up to 12 weeks unpaid.

I also remember learning that moms get 2 years off from work in Switzerland or Sweden and they're guaranteed their job when they return. They also get paid to have babies. I could be wrong though.

  • Mekiakoo.. I think you are right about that and I think it is Sweden.

We are not even guaranteed 6 weeks paid leave.. that is a company policy.  Since my company in the US is less then 50 employee they do not have to guarantee us anything.. it really sucks :(
  • That really sucks. I bet whoever came up with these kinds of laws were all males who have never given birth.

But seriously, this is why I am praying we'll be able to have babies just before/after summer break so we'd have more time with them before having to return to work.

And not to mention, daycare costs are way higher for infants, especially 6 week olds.

  • Yeah, I'm crossing fingers that I can actually stay home with them at least until VPK....then I will go back to work...I really do not want my children in daycare until the age of VPK....(so like  4).

Yes, I do think it is Sweden...but I'll take this company in Australia!!
  • I know! France is also really good, from what I hear!

I was just looking at our policy yesterday. We have to use PTO during the first week, but then we get 75% of our pay for up to 12 weeks (not sure if that counts the first week or not?) So it could definitely be worse! We also don't have to buy into our short term disability, the company pays for it all, but that does mean we have to pay taxes on that "income". I'm feeling pretty lucky in terms of the maternity leave at our company. Still, it'd be nice if the US could make it a bit better for everyone.

  • I only get what I have in my sick leave bank if I want any paid maturity leave at all.  Also, since I'm a teacher they hold out three days worth of pay every check so that I can get paid during the summer.  If you take any unpaid maturity leave which you can, in the summer you wont get paid for that amount of time because it was not held out of your check since you were'nt getting paid.  It totally sucks

  • We have it pretty good here in Canada as well - we get 1 yr off with pay (not 100% pay but nearly) as well as they have to guarantee our jobs as well after one year!

Switerzland would be best for the 2 or 5 yrs you get off ;lol
  • Oh yes, we are required to use up all of our sick leaves during maternity leave. If we run out of sick leaves before 6 weeks is up, we'll be able to use the leave bank.

I am kind of annoyed by this because even if I had only one sick leave left- I'd still be able to take 6 paid weeks off. I don't understand why we have to use up our sick leaves too. It's especially hard returning work with no sick leaves at all and I can predict lots of doctor appointments or a sick baby- then I'd need to get unpaid leave every time until the new school year starts.

  • This is a topic that has me going back and forth! I want to go home when I'm ready to give birth because I want to be with my family. That's very important to me. I don't think I could do it without them. But everything in the US is sooooo expensive! There are many more benefits for moms (and dads!) here in Ecuador. Actually a friend of ours is pregnant now and all her checkups are free. FREE!! And it's not just the economy and salary difference because all the other costs are right where they should be. I feel like I can't say the same about hospital fees and everything else in the US :( Sucks to be stuck in between all of this
