HELP!! Looking for an amazing caribbean location for my honeymoon 8/12-8/18/13..

So in planning the resorts I DEFINITELY want all-inclusive. I am not necessarily looking to go through a travel agent, but if it's recommended I'd consider it. Fiance has never traveled out of the country and I've gone to Bahamas, Jamaica and PR.  We want to go somewhere the other hasn't gone.  My parents are providing this as a gift so I am in no way trying to break the bank. The resort I fell in love with was the Rose Hall Hilton in Montego Bay! Food, entertainment, room, grounds...everything was wonderful! I like a contemporary style room and a place with GREAT food!!! I like Aruba, Antigua, Turks and Caicos (which may not have AI places), and St. Lucia. I really like Dominican Republic, but I feel it's so close to Jersey I can go at any time. I can get over it if the places are nice...please help!!!! feel free to email me at camisha.hill@gmail.com Thanks!

  • There are Sandals resorts on a few of the islands you've mentioned -- maybe start there?

  • I would try other resorts that aren't Sandals. People tend to only think Sandals when they refer to All Inclusives. There are hundreds out there that are much more affordable but have the same level of service.
    What is your budget?

  • I wouldn't go to Aruba if you want all-inclusive.  Aruba has AMAZING restaurants and it's an expensive island to begin with.  You'd be spending a fortune for an all-inclusive & probably missing out on amazing food.  August is hurricane season, so keep that in mind...
  • As another poster said, just be careful during hurricane season.  You can still go, and will most likely get a great deal due to the time of year.  Definately look into insurance just in case if you end up booking there.  It will be hot - but hey that is what pools and beaches are for IMO ;)

However, Aruba is outside the Hurricane belt so if you are set on the Carribean I would consider there.  I also double the reco to NOT stay AI at Aruba.  The food is the best I have had in the Carribean so far (I haven't been everywhere, but have been to a few islands).  It is also safe to leave the hotel and go to restaurants around the island.  Aruba can definately be expensive - but there are reasonable places to eat and stay as well.  You can always jump on Expedia and start searching for airfare and hotel to get an idea.  It all depends on your budget!!  I am a huge Aruba fan - so if you want more details about the island feel free to PM me.

Here are some other islands that most likely wouldn't be impacted by hurricanes: "The only inhabited Caribbean islands not in the hurricane belt are BarbadosGrenadaBocas del ToroTrinidad and TobagoBonaireCuraçaoArubaProvidencia IslandSan Andrés, and the islands off Venezuela (although they do occasionally get impacted as well)."

    Be wary of hurricane season.

Another vote for Aruba, but definitely agree with PP's to NOT stay at an AI. I believe there are only one or two hotels there that even offer that option. We honeymooned there the first week in August and the weather was perfect. (While at the same time, a tropical storm hit the Dominican Republic.) We personally did not want to take the chance about hurricanes. One less thing to stress about. A little lower on the threads there is a post about Aruba where you can read a little more information provided by other posters.

Personally, I'd caution against the Dominican Republic. Aside from it being in the hurricane belt, you cannot drink the water there, and the chance of you getting sick from it is fairly high. Almost everyone I know who has visited the DR, including myself, has had major stomach issues while on vacation there or experienced problems once they got home.

If you really like Jamaica, I've heard positive things about Rose Hall Suites Hilton, though I've never been there. Negril, another area a bit farther away from the airport, is also supposed to be a very nice area.

ETA: If you choose a location within the hurricane belt, I strongly suggest investing in travelers insurance.

  • You will be safe from hurricanes in St. Lucia as well they have a really good record of no being effected by them.

Look into TiKaye Village and Stonefield Villa Estates, both have  the option of being all inclusive. We did semi inclusive which meant breakfast and dinner, no drinks or lunch. We had our own drinks for the day time. You can go to town during the day and get supplies.

I would definitely not suggest Sandals resorts as they ar e a total ripoff.

There are other AI's on St. Lucia.
If you want really special this is the island i suggest.

Aruba is ok, Rose hall isnt that great, St. John is another island to look at.

  • We recently went to the DR. Depending on where you are flying from it can be super affordable. We stayed at an all-inclusive called Lifestyles. Had an awsome vacation. Great because it had quiet areas as well as bars and clubs. We even went waterfalling, and there were a lot of other fun excursions too. This is the site we went through. They were great.

Tell them Kathleen sent you. They should remember us since our trip was not that long ago. Good luck!
