  Im not one for appropriateness so, Id put that info right on the invite.  Or, you can let whoever is hosting "let people know" about the registery. 
  
  Even though you have household items, you can still put new pots, new bedding, ect  can never hurt.  If you want mostly money or gift cards, I'd make the registry short.

  FI andI just completed our registry this weekend. As far as things to register for I would definitely do towels (can never have too many), sheets, maybe some china, vases, stuff that you may have that is old and would like to replace.

  FI and I are in the same situation as y'all are in. We did not register for any gifts because we both have our own households. I opted to not put any of that info on the wedding invites and my BMs did not put it on the Bridal Shower invites. I did, however, put info about gifts on our wedding website. Also, my mom and others are stating that cash is the best gift if people ask. Here is what we put on our wedding website on the gift registry page: "We have opted to not register for a gift registry as we will be combining two complete households and will therefore have double...maybe even triple of everything! Your presence at our wedding, your prayers and blessings for an everlasting and healthy marriage is gift enough, but if you do wish to give us more, a contribution towards our dream honeymoon would be much appreciated.  For those of you choosing to bless us with monetary gifts and cards, there will be a secure and safe decorative Wedding Card Box located on the table at the reception." And I did not do a registry for any wedding event. Because frankly we would prefer cash. However, some ppl will still want to give a gift and that's fine too.
