Buying our own liquor vs. Bartender provding alcohol

Is it better to buy your own liquor at a Costco rather than the bartender providing the drinks? What about mixed drinks?

Re: Buying our own liquor vs. Bartender provding alcohol

  • Buying your own alcohol is usually much less expensive than having your caterer provide it.   You can buy beer and wine from wholsesale clubs, and alcohol form any liquor store.  Some will even let you return unopened bottles/cases.    You should still have a bartender serve the drinks (your venue and/or your event insurance may even require it).

  • Absolutely cheaper to provide it yourself but make sure you hire a bonded/insured bartender to serve.
  • Check with your venue first. They may not allow you to bring in your own liquor.

  • You don't have to have a licensed bartender unless your venue requires it - just want to clear that up.

And as was stated, check with your venue first.
  • Something to consider- you will need to tip the bartender. Any matre 'd, bridal attendant, shuttle driver etc etc will need to be tipped, so make sure you account for that in your expenses if you choose to have the bartender.

This requirement will vary state to state so some may require it, some may not.  What is important here is that most venues that let you bring in your own alcohol are also ones where the person signing the contract takes on any laibility for the alcohol served.  Venues like that in my area require one day insurance policies (usually taken out against home-owners insurance, but could also be wedding insurance) when alcohol is served.  When our last DD was married the alcohol was provided by her and her DH so they got a bonded/insured/licensed bartender to lessen their liability and to have someone with experience in cutting people off if they needed it.
